Pleased to Meet You: Bergman Beach

Okay, so let’s just put this out there…we’ve actually met the members of Bergman Beach many a time…as the group features members of Templo X and Shivery Shakes (both ATH Record alumnae). But, please don’t let those two bands influence your expectations, as the new project is said to envision “what the Beach Boys would sound like if they were from Nashville.” For me, it kind of recalls some of the latter Conor Oberst records where’s he culling from the rich history of Americana, much like this group does…though they’ve added in a nice backing vocal to give the song a melodic balance we hope you enjoy. Let’s hope we’ve get more from the group going forward!

Collection of Best of Austin for 2019

Clearly, based on the name of our site, we’re always down to represent Austin, and while I feel like releases were down in the city this year, there was tons of great stuff to be devoured. Rather than rank and file our friends; we’re just here to uplift the scene, and maybe remind you of some Texas music that might have (it shouldn’t!) slipped under your radar. Black Pumas got the deserved love, but there’s tons bubbling beneath the surface. I mostly broke it into labels, as they’re the heart and soul of this city. Comes with a fancy playlist.

Shivery Shakes Share Nostalgic Loop

One of the first records we put out on our little ATH Records label was the debut LP from Austin’s Shivery Shakes; it seems like so so long ago, but now we’ve got something new working for you. The band have signed on to let us put out Weird Weather, their follow-up album…it’s slated for a late September release. Today I bring you one of the standout numbers from the LP, which has also been one of my favorite live jams as of late; I love the way it builds all the way, then has this huge breakdown at the end. If you’re into supporting the album, and you want a fancy copy on pink vinyl…you can grab it HERE.

Checking in on Austin

There’s just always so much going on, I felt like I should throw in a small write-up of some things I’ve been jamming here recently. Word on the street is that the Daphne Tunes and Xetas LPs are done, Abram Shook has a new LP on the way..we here at ATH Records also have somethings in the works. And, other people just keep pumping out hits. So hit the jump to check in on Austin with me.

Shivery Shakes Return With “No Return”

The boys are back in town! Shivery Shakes announced their upcoming LP, Weird Weather, a few weeks back, but today, they’ve finally shared a track for our listening pleasure. This hometown four piece has been wowing us with their weirdo brand of surf pop tunes for a while, releasing their debut LP Three Waves & A Shake way back in 2014. Since then they’ve been quiet, but begin their triumphant return, ironically, with “No Return.” Impossibly tight knit beachy guitar riffs crash and collide with shimmery percussion, grounding bass lines and Will Glosup’s fuzzy vocals. The result is a track that’s perfect for the summer; listening to this song, you feel the need to get in your car, roll down the windows, pull on your shades and start driving to the beach or any body of water.

Weird Weather will be out sometime late September on our very own ATH Records. Word on the street is that this will be the pop album of the year. Take a listen to the perfect summer jam below and get stoked.

Genuine Leather Drop New Single + Release Show

We’ve long been behind Austin act Genuine Leather, but the group has been fairly quiet since the release of Brunch in 2016. But, today they return with a brand new single and celebratory show at Cheer Up Charlies. The new song has a horror-themed video to accompany it, with just a bit of fun added in to match the song’s pop desires. Just sit back and let those crunchy guitars burst through your speakers, wait for the vocal hooks to wash over you, then rinse and repeat. The band celebrate the new single with a great line-up at Cheer Up Charlies featuring Shivery Shakes, Pollen Rx and Robby; the band will have some old school TVs up to, streaming the new video with headphone sets attached for your listening pleasure.

Shivery Shakes Offer New Music on Slack Capital 2

Slack Capital 2 is a compilation of music by 27 of the greatest bands in Austin. All proceeds from the comp go to SafePlace, which provides support for victims of domestic and sexual violence. Were unveiling one song per day until the the release party on April 14.

Song of the Day: Shivery Shakes – Both Ways

It’s been a couple of years since Shivery Shakes released the marvelous Three Waves and a Shake, but let this new song serve as a reminder of the band’s innate knack for writing hook-laden pop tunes. This new song has been kicking around in the band’s live set for some time, but you’re getting the study polish here…which might be the best way to really “get” the band’s craft.

Press play in the song will blast off as the drums pound and the guitars angle their way through the opening credits. Will Glossup’s voice rings in as the band gleefully bounce forward. I love how the vocals seem to be pacing themselves, until they push into the chorus and Glossup stretches his voice with force. Much like the live performance, the band wraps up this number with a quick little jam that ends abruptly. Short and sweet, this band’s gifts are undeniable.

See the band do what they do best at Hotel Vegas tomorrow night if you’re living in Austin!

Pre-Order Slack Capital 2 HERE.

Join us on April 14th at Barracuda for the Release Party.

Show Pics: The Ocean Party @ Cheer Up (2/28)

Our friends The Ocean Party made it to the US again to do a spell of touring. Their reason for coming to Austin was to visit sports bars, wear thongs while riding bicycles and crush some chicken-fried steak. Since that was all easily accomplished in a single 80’s montage, a show was in order. Given the affection we have for the Aussie’s, it would be natural to want to see them at a friendly venue with a friend-filled lineup. Cheer Up played host and joining the bill was Daphne, Summer Salt and Shivery Shakes.

I have a great big gallery of photos to share after the break along with a few comments.

I encourage you all to head out tomorrow night to Cheer Up Charlies. There’s a huge line-up of great pop music, some of which I’ve had a hand in putting out on vinyl. For instance, we’ve helped The Ocean Party from Australia put out Light Weight in the US, and this might be one of the few chances you get to see the band live! Second, you’ll have Shivery Shakes and Summer Salt, both perennial pop powerhouses who we’ve released stuff from in the past (and present). Plus, you’ll get to hear Daphne, which is Santiago from Growl‘s other project, as well as Summer Swells. You won’t find a better bill in town, and it’s free, with donations highly encouraged to help out The Ocean Party while on tour in the States. Sample some tunes below, and see you tomorrow at 9 PM.
