Classic Punk From Vaguess

vaguessOh man, you know it’s a good track when you get shade from Nathan for beating him to post it. Vaguess (pronounced Vegas) is the moniker of this project from Vinny Vaguess, and the best punk rock band out of the L.A area that you haven’t heard yet. On the cusp of releasing a compilation of the best tracks from their series of cassette tapes, Vaguess has done you the favor of making the lo-fi grit and gristle accessible to you, and once you’re done listening to “Danny’s Park” below, you’ll surely go show your appreciation by preordering the Bodhi Collection here . What’s not to love about the gang vocals, rambunctiously tinny percussion, and twangy electric guitars?

Funky Tune from HOMESHAKE

homemaltThe good things about boutique labels working with other, larger, entities, is that they can release really great music that might not get the time of day otherwise.  That’s what I get from Homeshake, one of the bands on Sinderlyn.  It’s not that I don’t dig the tune; it’s that it reaches out there a bit from the modern indie lore, so I like that it gets a day in the sun.  There’s this really funky guitar line grooving all over the place, using a chilled out vocal delivery to really settle things down.  Does indie funk exist as a genre? Maybe easy-indie listening or elevator indie? Regardless, I’ll be down to listen to the whole In the Shower LP when it’s release on October 7th.

Sinderlyn Reissue Walter TV and Girls Tears

bandThe label group that began with Captured Tracks has blossomed into this incredible super group of small labels, some of which are focusing on reissuing lost classics.  Today one of those labels, Sinderlyn, announced two great reissues, Walter TV and Girls Tears.  The first single below is from Walter TV; it’s a bouncy post-punk piece with the warbling vocals lurking beneath the main mix; the band is also known for their touring work with Mac Demarco.  I’m also hoping the song’s title, “Master Ludi” is a Herman Hesse reference. Girls Tears is an LA act with more of a frenetic pacing to their punk rock sound.  The albums are titled Appetite (WTV) and Tension (GT), and thanks to Sinderlyn, they’re seeing physical releases for the first time ever on September 23rd!
