Stream Gabe Hascall’s Realize What’s Real

Last year before the pandemic hit, as in days before, we released Gabe Hascall‘s Thousands of Thorns LP over on ATH Records; it was a quiet collection from the former Impossibles/Slowreader songwriter, offering a glimpse at what was to come upon his return. This year, he’s had the time to hole up and make bolder steps with Realize What’s Real, which is out into the world today! As a longtime fan, I love the little nuanced note changes in Gabe’s voice, something that, to me, just feels like home. There’s a vinyl version on its way in the next few weeks, so grab one before they sell out like the first LP! Happy Release Day Gabe!

Announcing Gabe Hascall’s Realize What’s Real

We were more than thrilled to help Gabe Hascall, formerly of the Impossibles/Slowreader, get his last solo record Thousands of Thorns out there into the world. But, since its Bandcamp Friday and all, we figured we’d announce we’re doing another great record with Gabe, titled Realize What’s Real. The record is dropping in May, but we wanted to give everyone a heads up and share the first great single for you…in case you wanted to grab it before your friends! Artwork is done by Austin’s Antonio Bond, and as always, is really special. Press play and enjoy!

The perks of running a web site and a record label? You get to toss up the stuff you release just because you love it. For me, when Gabe Hascall asked about releasing his debut solo LP, it was a no brainer. I spent many a night as a teenager watching him on stage in Austin’s beloved The Impossibles; I had to buy multiple copies when he and Rory went solo as Slowreader. So last Friday we put out Thousands of Thorns on our ATH Records imprint, and if you’re into stuff along the lines of Stephen Steinbrink or Angelo de Augustine, you’re going to love this LP! You can grab it HERE, or enjoy the stream below!

Announcing Gabe Hascall’s Thousands of Thorns

Not only do we get to write about music every day, but we also put out a bunch of records! Our next release on ATH Records is really personal, as I grew up listening to Gabe Hascall and his band the Impossbiles throughout my high school years. He’s been away from Austin for a minute, living in Portland, but he’s returned, and blessed us with this incredible LP, Thousands of Thorns. Those that were familiar with his band Slowreader will hear some similarities, but this feels more personal, more intimate. I’ve been waiting and waiting to get this record into your hands, and the time is near, as Thousands of Thorns will be out on April 10th.

FTC: The Impossibles

impossiblesAs I thought about this year’s best Austin albums (which comes out next week folks), I came across an ancient video of one of my favorite local bands, The Impossibles. Growing up in Austin, I had the pleasure of singing along with this band at least once a month.  Sure, I didn’t know everyone there, but I felt as if they were all my friends.  We screamed, we threw up our hands in unison, and yes, we skanked a little bit, or a whole lot, depending upon your dedication and conditioning.  The guys in this band went on to play parts in Mineral and LAX (lets not forget Slowreader).   It was a time of youth and innocence, and The Impossibles were the perfect blend of both.  Let’s travel down memory lane together.
