Black Marble Announces Fast Idol

I’ve been jamming to Black Marble for a hot minute now, and while I’m partial to the earlier work of Chris Stewart, he’s definitely hitting a more accessible pop stride with his latest works…and looks like that continues with the new record Fast Idol. Our first listen is accompanied by this incredible video from Theo Sixou, following around an exuberant pair through the streets of Paris; they seem to be searching for that unidentifiable “somewhere” of the song’s title. Both the song and the video are worth your while today, and we’ll keep you posted as more singles drop from the forthcoming Fast Idol, which is out on October 22nd via Sacred Bones Records.

Sun June Share Bad Girl Video

The new Sun June is simply indescribable. I’ve attempted to pigeonhole it, make clever comparisons, express my initial thoughts…but for all that effort, I have no words. It’s like this magnificent quicksand; I’m watching myself sinking into an unknown abyss, yet as this song plays in the background, I’m not unhappy. In fact, this song feels like just letting things be. It has movement, thus the choreography, but at times, its so patient and unobtrusive that it just swirls about your head dizzyingly. Some songs are better left without my detailing; they speak for themselves. Look for Somewhere next February via Run For Cover/Keeled Scales.

Sun June Announce Somewhere LP

With the release of “Singing” last month, we all knew Sun June had something cooking; today they officially announce the release of their new LP, Somewhere, handled by Run for Cover and Keeled Scales. For me, I’m not sure what’s more striking at this point…the song or its accompanying video. I love the use of light and shadow in the video, directed by the band’s own Laura and Stephen, but damned if the song doesn’t blow the rest of the musical competitors out of the water. The song, trickles in around forlorn notes and Colwell’s solemn delivery; you’re almost oblivious to the subtle tension building, bursting through near the 2:50 mark to deliver an emphatic sonic euphoria that solidifies the song’s greatness. The LP will be out in February of next year!

New-ish Music from Fred Thomas

We all know and adore Fred Thomas, right? He’s worked and played with everyone, but today let us focus on the announcement of a forthcoming B-Sides and Rarities titled Another Song About Riding the Bus, Collected Songs 2002-2020. This release is part of the new Selected Series, highlighting overlooked artists and their works. How do we listen to Fred and not just swoon? Maybe because I was super into Saturday Looks Good to Me, or maybe its just this refined pop sound, but I can’t ever seem to pull away here; its like a damned tractor beam pulling in me and my wallet. Never a bad day to celebrate Fred, so enjoy this number. Antiquated Future Records will release this collection on October 26th.

Another Gum Country Tune

I think you’ll all be happy to know that this Gum Country record does indeed rule, and you’ll finally be able to hear it in its entirety next week! But, before we get there, lets rejoice in another single to make sure you get your daily dose of ear candy. It’s all fuzzy guitars and space-age noises woven into the tapestry of Courtney’s melodic vocal delivery. This one feels more like a meditative state, letting you sink deep into the core of the song like some sort of psych-pop quicksand…if you don’t move, your body will float to the top of the song with a huge grin upon your face. Somewhere will be out next Friday.

Gum Country Share Another Jam

Honestly, I was just checking in on Gum Country this morning, wondering if another single had slipped by me. But, I was lucky, as I hadn’t missed a thing, though I had no idea this gem was coming my way. I love the pulsing energy from the guitars, pushing the pace with that steady rhythm in the background. The perfect blanket of fuzzy distortion wraps itself around the core of the song, not to mention the hazy bubble on the vocals; this is exactly what guitar pop music should sound like if you ask me. Don’t be afraid to listen for that slight little pop sensibility gurgling beneath the surface; put your head closer to the speaker if you need to! Somewhere will be out on June 19th!

Gum Country Announce Debut LP

Why on Earth can’t more bands sound like this? I mean, I reckon I’d get bored after a long time, but I’ll be damned if this Gum Country tune isn’t the right jam for me. It’s got the fuzzy bits that make my ears perk up near the stereo, but still carries on that pop sensibility that makes a song worthy of repeated listens. The band set out to make ‘harsh twee,’ and while I can hear that applying, I do think they take this beyond twee pastiche; it almost seems to have a little psychedelic noodle coursing through the core of the song. Their debut LP Somewhere will be out via Kingfisher Bluez and Burger Records.

Sleep Good Is Back with a New Single

It’s been a few years since we last heard new music from Will Patterson’s project, Sleep Good. He’s back now with a brand new album titled Bohemian Grove, and I couldn’t be more excited to hear what he’s bringing. I love the bouncing piano lines that hit in the background, but the swelling wall of sound that spins around the chorus is pretty remarkable. His pedigree includes working with SoundTeam back in the day, but I suggest you also take a listen to Skyclimber just to refresh your ideas on his gifts. Look for the new LP later this year in August.
