Top 10 Austin Albums Of 2009

1204top5coverWe thought about this long and hard, thinking over our favorite releases from bands located in Austin over the last year.  Blood was spilled, jabs were thrown, but overall, we feel like we got our hands around the best releases that we feel epitomized the Austin scene in 2009.  Don’t forget, we’re particular to our tastes, so while you may disagree, we reserve the right to stand by these ten acts and their albums from 09′.  Follow the jump for full list.

FT50: Songs of 2009

bestof2009cover_songsWe have to start this list off with a disclaimer.  We have three writers, all with different tastes, so the list should reflect that a little bit.  Also, these are our opinions, and by no means, are they meant to be seen as an “end all be all” to the question of what were the best songs of 2009.  That being said, we like our list quite a bit.  Sure, it’s got some expected numbers at the top, but the rest of the list is genius.  We’ve got some of the songs streaming for you, and the rest take you straight to youtube.  Follow the jump for full list.

FT5 – 2009 Jams of the Summer

0626top5coverWe’re right in the beginning of summer, as we can all tell by the ridiculous heat has been beating down upon us.  For us, we just sit around all day listening to sweet tunes, hoping that we can create the perfect playlists for our long drives to nowhere.  As per usual, we think we’ve provided you with a list of songs that are destined to have you turning up your stereo as you drive through the hill country or maybe you just want to throw them on during your barbecue.  Regardless, these are our jams of the summer.

Chaos in Tejas

chaosThe great thing about Austin is that we get the benefit of having our local promoters put together amazing weeks of shows, and this week, Chaos in Tejas proves just that point.  Sure, the bands might be a little bit on the harder/faster/heavier side of things, but there are some great bands; just check out these names: Ted Leo, The Thermals, Harvey Milk, Propaghandi, Strange Boys, Times New Viking, The Business and The Shaky Hands.  All bands that deserve your time and attention…not to mention the other great bands that will grace the stage along the whole Red River district.  A detailed list of shows and venues can be found here.

Daytrotter SXSW Sessions

20030654-3737972Damn you Daytrotter!  We promised these people no more posts about Glasvegas and then you go and do this!  What we’re talking about is a new series of live performances on the Daytrotter website featuring bands recorded during SXSW.  The sessions are extra special because each band takes a few of their songs and turns them into acoustic mini-ballads.  Right now the site has sessions posted by our very own Strange Boys and of course ATH favorite Glasvegas.  Check out this cry yourself to sleep at night version of Geraldine (also one of our songs of ’08).  Keep checking back to daytrotter often as more sessions are said to be on the way.

WDRTE Benefit @ Beerland 4/17

wdrteWhen a band’s equipment gets jacked everyone wants to kick the culprit’s ass.  If you can’t find the guy, a benefit to raise a little money can’t hurt.  That’s just what local band When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth have planned for Friday night at Beerland.  Several other local artists like Dikes of Holland, Strange Boys, Red X Red M, and Ralph White are joining in to help out.  Show starts at 10pm.

Strange Boys @ Beerland (3/28)

the-strange-boys-410x4101One of the best local acts around right now, The Strange Boys, are playing a show at Beerland this Saturday.  This should be a pretty nice way to work your way back into some live music after your exhausting week at SXSW.  The Austin boys are joined by opening acts Mass Hysteri and The Hex Dispensers.  Music starts at 10pm.

Psych Fest @ Radio Room 3/13-3/15

pf2_bigThe week/weekend before SXSW is usually pretty bland for live music, but a few locals have put together a nice little festival going down this weekend.  Over the weekend, if you’re not resting up for next week, you should make it out to the new Radio Room (map) for the 2nd annual Psych Fest.  The lineup for the weekend events is pretty impressive with big names like Black Angels, Strange Boys, Dead Meadow, Shapes Have Fangs, A Place to Bury Strangers, and tons more.  Tickets for the event are on sale now and are going for $45 for a 3 day pass and $15 for individual day tickets.  Music starts at 9pm on Friday and 1pm on both Saturday and Sunday.  Check out the official website for full schedule and band info or have a look at that trippy flier.
