…with Blushing, too.
I am finally getting around to sharing some pics from our little party the other night at Hole in the Wall. I used to go there quite a bit way back in the day. I went on a few dates with a girl whose family lived there. I dared not go back for a decade after breaking up, just in case.
HitW also made for a great test of some new hardware. I have gone mirrorless with Sony. It is a brave new world.
Click through to see some photos from the night full of Blushing, Tres Oui and Growl with a few thoughts on both music and photography.
From time to time we like to put together little rock n’ roll shows, and boy do we have an incredible one for you tomorrow night at Hole in the Wall. It just happens to feature some ATH Records bands breaking down the doors and throwing some great pop music in your faces. Blushing is one of our favorite new acts in town, so hopefully you’ve caught on to their dreamy stylings. Tres Oui, well, those guys are great…this is jangling Prefab Sprout at its best. Oh, and you didn’t hear Growl all over your local radio in April? Well, come see them! Doors are at 9..we’ll see you there!
October is the show season in Austin, with tons of bands filing into town. I’ve had this show with Widowspeak on my calendar since its announcement a few months back, and after spending a lot of time with the group’s new effort, All Yours. It’s probably their best work, depending upon who you ask; it shows a great deal of maturity in the songwriting. The intimate setting of Lamberts offers up a perfect place for fans to catch the band live. But, more important is that you show up early to catch Reservations take the stage. Their one of the best Austin acts playing write now, and their debut effort, just recently released is one of Austin’s best records this year. Give a listen to the two below, and we’ll see you Friday.
Doors are at 9:30. Tickets are $12 from C3.
The great thing about the vinyl boom is it seems like everyone’s out there making music, and even more people are out there to release it for them. Still, with some many boutique labels, you’ve got to really search for the right place to release music, or even to buy it. One of those labels that I’ve gravitated towards is Emotional Response Records. They’ve just announced two brand new Split 7″s, and I love them both equally, though for separate reasons. I’m absolutely stuck on Oakland Health Academy (members of Boyracer, American Culture) and their track; it’s featured below and I’d love for someone to deny the power in that song…the feedback on the guitars comes in all the right places. They split the 7″ with Heavy Pet. But, another release is the Enemy Anemone/Cougar Vox Split 7″. That EA track is just this joyous blast of pop music, completed in an endearing ramshackle fashion. Bounce = fun. Stream the songs below, and grab the vinyl from Emotional Response.
It’s one of those weekends that reminds you that Austin music scene isn’t dead, and there’s plenty going on for all you music lovers. There’s some great traveling acts, as well as some really stellar all local act line-ups.
Here’s a quick run down for Saturday night.
Can these guys release an album already! Earlier this year we were treated to a nice little studio demo of a new Skittle Alley tune, and just yesterday they unleashed two more great tunes in the demo version; they have me, as well as other indiepop fans aching for the group’s new album. One of the tunes is an oldie that was recorded, while the other just seems to be a beautiful new piece that will hopefully appear from the band later. It doesn’t matter where or when really, as we should spend the rest of our day just appreciating these delightful tunes, so here you go.

Long ago, due to my adoration of Crayon Fields, we made friends with the guys at Chapter Music. In the last few years they’ve released hits from Twerps, Dick Diver, and many more, so we’re pleased to share with you their two new singles from this week. The first is from Darren Sylvester, a visual artist in Australia; his album Off By Heart is released on October 4th. Then, there’s Bushwalking, a post-rock trio with an arty sound; they’ll release No Enter on September 6th. Enjoy these two tunes, then go browse the Australian label’s catalog for more undiscovered hits.
Look, I know all of Austin is excited for the SOLD OUT Purity Ring set at Mohawk, as I hear the band is a big deal. But, that being said, if you’re not sticking around afterwards or not headed into the venue when the show is over, you’re going to miss out on two of Austin’s most promising acts. We’ve been behind Black Books and Tiger Waves from the start, and the more each group progresses, the more we continue to be amazed by their performances. Plus, Tiger Waves head out on tour the next day to represent Austin, so we’ve gotta send our boys off on the right foot! I promise those of you with an appreciation for interesting pop music, you won’t want to skip out. Here’s a song by Tiger Waves and Black Books, respectively, just to entice you a bit more.
