Virginia Trance Shares New Single

I was scrambling this morning for tunes that fit my mood; nothing was really fitting my day until I came across this new track from Virgina Trace. The description claims nods to Felt and the Dream Syndicate, but it also feels like its steeped in the current sound of Australia…though the project is based in New York. It’s got that bright folk attitude, set in the most casual manner, as if the pace of the day is absolutely meaningless…which feels oddly like the current state of the world. It’s a pleasant Tuesday ditty off Vincent’s Playlist, the new LP dropping on May 8th via BYM Records.

Tape Deck Mountain Announce Echo Chamber Blues

I’ve been writing about Tape Deck Mountain since I stumbled upon their album, Sway, way back in 2013. I’m really stoked to hear that the group has a brand new album, Echo Chamber Blues, coming our way in February of next year. The tune below definitely rides on the tails of shoegaze, though the guitars aren’t as loud in the front of the mix, creating more of a resonating squall that sits right behind the vocals. This group always manages to craft what I can only describe as a beautiful darkness, with careful melodies taking on heavy tones and a noisy sterility that lurks throughout. If you’re into the gaze, then gaze here.

Whirr Offer Up New Song

wereThis track from Whirr is really something.  The quiet opening sets the perfect stage for the outfit to crash into your ears with a heavy-handed bit of drumming surrounded by a wall of atmospheric noise that bends and shapes its way around the soft vocal.  The recording is one of the better versions I’ve heard from the modern shoegaze-ish era, building this remarkable balance between the vocals and the instrumentation; it makes the song seem more cohesive, as if it was all one thought, rather than someone lumping in one or the other for effect.  Their album, Sway, will be released on September 23rd via Graveface Records. Austinites can check them out on Sept. 6th over at Red 7.

Dark Tune from Whirr

whirrThis track popped up the other day, and I’ve had a really hard time getting it out of my head.  There’s something about the wash of atmospheric guitars that creates this interesting brood, while another guitar track angularly plays beneath.  I like how those guitars, however, are rather low in the mix, meaning the band could unleash fury in the live setting, or hold onto the pattern presented here.  Either way, Whirr is likely to cause a decent stir when they release their album Sway, followed by a fall tour; it’s being released on September 23rd via Graveface Records.

More New Music From Tape Deck Mountain

Press_Photo.7After the release of a new 7″ in June, Tape Deck Mountain has managed to drum up a lot of positive press all over the interwebs.  Working behind that buzz, new single “Pretend Friends” just made its way to the internet as promotion for a new album.  The song is rad as rad can be.  Those moments in the song where you seem to be lulled into a slower tune and then slapped in the face with some heavily distorted guitars are more than impressive.  Really looking forward to this one.

New album Sway will be out October 1st on Nineteen 98.
