New Music from Tim Cohen

You probably recognize Tim Cohen as the frontman for one of my favorite groups, The Fresh & Onlys. But, that’s not his only gig, as he’s been honing his craft for some time as a solo artist, releasing several albums. He’s got another one titled Magic Trick coming out via Captured Tracks on February 22nd, and maybe this will be the one when people really start to take notice of his skills. This first single has a nice little juxtaposed female voice countering with Tim’s gruff vocals, which definitely provides a smoother tone to the song as a whole, making Tim seem more like a Sonny Smith style songwriter than merely just a beastly frontman. You won’t hear a bad song on this record; I can guarantee that.

Show Preview: The Fresh & Onlys @ Emos (10/27)

On the midweek marquis at Emos this week, you have to come out. There’s no way around it, The Fresh & Onlys are going to be playing. They just released their new album, Play It Strange, which is surely going to be in our Top 20 of the year, and I can’t get songs like “Waterfalls” out of my head. Recorded, there definitely is a bit of haze to their sound, but live, they’re an entirely different animal; it’s something you definitely need to see in order to understand. Also in attendance will be Royal Baths and Rayon Beach, so two more reasons to get out to this show. The touring year is winding down, and this looks to be one of the best shows Austin has left, so don’t miss out!

Man, this song seemed like it was everywhere today, popping up on Pitchfork and Stereogum, so lets just throw it out there…what a rad song. Fresh and Onlys have just released their album Grey-Eyed Girls, and you can’t help but love some of the tunes off this one. It’s chock full of solid hits, which definitely makes the album worthy of your purchase. Check it.
