Show Pics: Mynabirds @ The Mohawk (7/28)

Back to the friendly confines, Mohawk’s inside stage played host to the Mynabirds touring with locals Deep Time. Another local band My Jerusalem used the opening slot.

It was a cool mix. The outside show with Murder By Death as headliner had a comfortable crowd, some of which stayed behind for the inside show which added to the crowd but it was never “crowded”. The night felt like a showcase or label party. Calm, plenty of friendly faces, the kind of show you can go to solo and just have fun in the crowd.

Show Review: Glass Candy @ The Mohawk (7/30)

Back in the friendly confines where All Are Welcome, Friday night’s program featured local up and comers, a band strengthening their reputation and a duo throwing a full on dance party. The end of the night I walked away spent because it was ninety-something at show time and a sold out sweaty mob.

Orthy took the early crowd over, Chromatics were amazing and Glass Candy, well you are going to have to click through to get the details. …and plenty of pics.

Show Pics: Chaos in Tejas (6/2)

After taking a night to relax and sweat at Stubb’s, it was back into the Chaos. Primary venue choice was Club DeVille, but I did pop next door to see the goings-ons.

Club DeVille scored a great lineup for the indie kids with Sea Lions, Royal Headaches and The Clean. I saw more Japanese hardcore at The Mohawk courtesy Zyanose, full mosh pit included. Ironically, I took an elbow to the face while shooting Royal Headache.

Show Pics: Father John Misty @ The Mohawk (5/26)

The day after Ty and Suckers, I “had to” go to The Mohawk to see Father John Misty with Har Mar Superstar and Dana Falconberry.

It was a very contrasting set of bands. Dana Falconberry‘s solemn folk melody gave way to Har Mar‘s jams and cock buffet invites led to J. Tillman’s mix of the two. To PYAITK, Father John Misty is J Tillman‘s project after leaving Fleet Foxes. He also played drums for Har Mar during their run out on the road.

It was a strange evening. And I got a decent Har Mar headstand pic, finally…

Show Pics: Ty Segall @ Mohawk (5/25)

Last Friday was a disgustingly busy night of shows. The ATH crew split time between The Mohawk and Red7.

First up for show coverage is the four band line-up at The Mohawk headlined by Ty Segall. After the recent recorded collaboration, it was only natural for White Fence to back up Ty. Along for the ride were Memphis band Useless Eaters and one of my local favorites Rayon Beach.

Show Review: Active Child @ The Mohawk (5/4)

It was way too hot for early May as The Mohawk played host to Active Child with Superhumanoids and Balam Acab opening. RayRay insisted I would be surprised by the live set. After a few beers at Easy Tiger, we wandered up Red River half-jokingly singing clips from You Are All I See. What would an Active Shild cover of “Cumbersome” sound like?

Anyway, click through. I have plenty of pics and a few more show notes…

Show Pics: Chairlift @ The Mohawk (4/17)

The show preview nailed it. It was Ladies Night at The Mohawk. Magnetic, charming, engaging and technical, playing solo or as the front person – the women on stage controlled the night.

Chairlift was in town for SxSW and played a heavy schedule. Would there be local fatigue? Would their set create a better, more unique experience for the fans? The set up bands, Bell and Nite Jewel, certainly gave good reason to get out and about early and leave some money at the door.

Show Pics: School of Seven Bells @ Mohawk (4/13)

Finally through this last round of shows. It was Friday the 13th, so I wore a hockey mask. Nah, not really.

School of Seven Bells played the Mohawk. A newly refined two-piece, Benjamin Curtis and Alejandra Deheza brought along an extra keyboard player and drummer to fill out their live line up. They also brought along Exitmusic as the opener.

Head past the break and you will get show notes and plenty of pics.
