Last Week’s Jams (2.26 – 3.1)

As we ramp up towards SXSW, things have been in full swing over at the ATH camp. We ran a bunch of our “getting-to-know-you” interviews with the Ophelias, Jess Cornelius, Tigercub and Native Harrow. But, we also covered a shit-ton of new music that’s worth revisiting, if you’re up for it. Our old friends Blushing dropped a new tune from their next LP, plus we got to hear more from Dancer and Torrey in relation to their new releases. Long time ATH faves like Mo Troper and Rosie Tucker made an appearance too, with each having their own new records on the horizon. Plus, a bunch of other greats like Red Sleeping Beauty, Klaus Johann Grobe, Non La and more…so dive on in.

Meet the SXSW Band: The Ophelias

We are here and in full force now with some SXSW band previews coming at you several times a week leading up to the festival. Today we are thrilled to share a preview with one of our favorite up and coming acts, Cincinnati based outfit The Ophelias. We get into some great discussions about new music along with a debate about who would be the best dual threat rhythm guitar player to have in your all time band. All that plus show details and a brand new song(!) after the jump.

New Tune from The Ophelias

I’m really impressed by the sounds coming out of the Ophelias camp in lieu of their next LP. Their latest shared composition is a wondrous take on modern indie rock aesthetics. Of course, I’m drawn into the way the intonation is changed in each syllable of the vocals, not to mention the way voices seem layered upon one another. But, the power of the vocals wouldn’t be as strong if it weren’t for the surrounding accompaniment; the swelling string works adds great depth. Almost everything seems like its running in a huge loop, as if the band were listening to tons of early trip-hop and decided to spin it in their own direction. They release Almost via Joyful Noise on July 13th.
