White Denim @ The Parish 4/17

whitedenim500Looks like local buzz band White Denim are going to start playing regularly around town again after taking a little break from the Austin scene.  The Parish is one of the few places I can’t remember the band playing and the venue should provide a unique experience to see the band.  Fellow locals Corto Maltese and Ume will be opening things up.  Doors are at 9:30 with music at 10:30.  Tickets are on sale now for $9 if you’re of age and $12 if you’re still illegal.

SXSW Watchlist: Telekinesis

telekinesisMichael Benjamin Lerner records under the moniker of Telekinesis, and he’s the most recent signing to indie stalwart Merge Records. His self-titled album is set to come out on April 7th, and its precisely the sort of album one would want with a Spring release; its full of warmth, yet filled with memorable pop moments.

His whole sound is difficult to put down on paper, as there seem to be many underlying elements. At some moments, he sounds like the more mature brother of young Ben Kweller, when Ben was geared towards the poppier side of life. Still, you might find some resemblance to Brendan Benson‘s solo works here, as fuzzed out guitar is mixed with precision drumming.  Even more interesting is a song like “Foreign Room,” which recalls Elliott Smith moments before picking up pace, all done to perfection. Mark my words, Telekinesis should be on your radar, and not just for SXSW.

He will be playing at The Parish on Saturday, March 21st at 8 PM.

1/30 Los Campesinos @ The Parish

lc2We’ve always been fans of Los Campesinos!, but we honestly weren’t sure what to expect in a live show from a 7 piece indie band comprised of members all in their early twenties. Throw out those preconceptions if they’re keeping you from seeing the band, because they brought the house down at The Parish on Friday night. In a time when most indie or indie “pop” bands can be boring and uninspired, Los Campesinos! brought a raw energy, musicianship and stage presence far more mature than their years would suggest. The band was a non stop bundle of energy jumping on and off stage while telling jokes in between songs. Despite the sometimes spastic tendencies of their music, the songs were beautifully done and created some small mosh pits towards the front of the crowd. Make a point to check these guys out the next time they come to your town and don’t forget your dancin’ shoes. Follow the jump to see some fancy live photos from the show.
