More New Stuff from Matinee Recordings

Matinee Recordings is wrapping up the end of this shitty year by trying to brighten the horizon, offering you some singles to look forward to in 2021. They’ve got two new jams to share with you today, from Northern Portrait and Royal Landscaping Society. Northern Portrait give you a heavy jangle feel, packaged in really neatly woven melodies; they’ve added some great layers on this song, giving you a bit of punch with your pop cocktail. They’ll have a brand new LP coming your way next year! Spanish outfit The Royal Landscaping Society offer you this blend of pulsing electronica and indiepop; I grinned every time that chorus dropped in, gentle and charming, bursting with euphoric feels! And don’t forget that heavy guitar solo in the song’s latter half to boot. This single comes with a cover of They Go Boom!’s “The Gift.” They’ve got a 17 track album coming your way next year, so keep your ears ready! Just be sure to visit Matinee frequently as the news seems pretty constant (and great) right now!

Electronic Indiepop from The Royal Landscaping Society

A few months ago we got a great new single from The Royal Landscaping Society; it was just two quick tunes, barely enough to satiate pop fans. But, and I’m only guessing here, the Spanish duo have popped out another forthcoming single, or maybe even an album…as there’s not much news from their label Matinee Recordings, other than, of course, uploading this track to the Internet. It’s got a nice electronic pulse beneath, offset by these lighter keyboard notes, building a dense cavern of catchy pop music from which the vocals emanate to wash over the listener. I’m on board with anything this bunch does, so I’ll keep you posted as I hear more about this release.

Indiepop from The Royal Landscaping Society

I was lucky enough to find that new Azure Blue release from Matinee Recordings last Friday, and the esteemed indiepop label has turned around and shared another new gem, this time from The Royal Landscaping Society. It’s going to be hard not to listen to this on repeat as often as one can; it offers up this dreamy guitar line that mixes it up with this deep tone and sharp percussive element, the sort that makes the dream pop/shoegaze kids swoon. Then comes the voice, bringing in a calming melody that doesn’t really go too far outside the song’s comfort zone…until the 2:12 mark (and the 3:16 mark). Here, the keyboards rise in, a strummed guitar line is apparent and the vocals swell, just a smidge. I’m so in love with this track. Keep your eyes peeled for a 7″ later this year on Matinee.

Go Listen to the Official Matinee World Cup EP

If you happen to be one of those folks who comes to this site from time to time, you know one of the labels we’ve long been behind is Matinee Recordings; we even threw up something from the label’s new Azure Blue release this week. Today, however, I can now profess my undying love of the label, as they’ve officially combined my two favorite things and put them all into one delectable ear treat with the Official Matinee World Cup EP. The label has gotten five indiepop artists from participating World Cup to craft brand new gems, relating to this summer’s World Cup (no US indiepop bands on this because Michael Bradley sucks). You’ve got Australia’s The Last Leaves, Sweden’s Red Sleeping Beauty, England’s The Popguns, Spain’s The Royal Landscaping Society…and the first new music in years from Brazil’s Pale Sundays. Seriously, this just makes Friday worth it. Stream the whole thing below, and buy it HERE.
