Another Tune from the Feelies Some Kinda Love LP

On a day when there just didn’t seem to be a lot to fall in love with, why not go with the tried-and-true classics, like the Feelies covering the Velvet Underground. As I’ve previously mentioned, the Feelis will soon be releasing Some Kinda Love, a full album’s worth of live recordings of the band covering the Velvet Underground. For me, and maybe my ears are off a bit, “I’m Waiting for the Man” seems to have more of a rush in the percussive element; it just feels like the tempo is pushing a bit, giving the song more of a growl than I think the original carried. The double album will be released by Bar None on October 13th!

The Feelies Cover Velvet Underground

If you hop on this site from time to time, you’ve likely heard of both these acts, and now the Feelies have officially announced Some Kinda Love, a live recording of the band doing an entire set of Velvet Underground covers, now being put to vinyl! They’ve released their cover of “Rock n’ Roll,” which has me listening back to the original in a totally new way. I mean, the guitar riffs are there, buried beneath the Lou Reed cool curl; you maybe have to put that kick drum into gear and add some space, but strip it down and feels every bit a Feelies tune. I’ve been fortunate enough to get a listen to some of these tunes, and I’m quite partial to “Sweet Jane.” If Some Kinda Love feels like your thing, then get it on October 13th via Bar None.

 

SQÜRL Covers The Velvet Underground

It’s a Thursday, so naturally I’m ready for any kind of track that’s weighty, and it’s a good thing that SQÜRL, the band formerly known as Bad Rabbit, are back– they released a track a few month ago from their third EP and now they’ve got this sweet cover of The Velvet Underground‘s, “Ocean.” Normally covers, let alone covers of legendary songs make me want to run in the opposite direction with my hands over my ears, but when I had a listen to this one I was simply entranced by the sonic heaviness of this track. The squalls of feedback and layers of instrumentation hit you in wave upon wave of noise and take you elsewhere. Enjoy the cover below and go order their EP #3 here.

Friday Top 5: Mix Tape Closers

That’s right, I said mix TAPE. The days of sitting in front of a boombox waiting for a song to come on the radio may be over, but I refuse to say “Mix CD” or to refer to a “digital playlist.” Too many syllables. Just doesn’t roll off the tongue like “mix tape.” Yeah, I know a while back ATH ran a “Top 5 Album Closers” list, but this is different. Because I added the whole “mix tape” angle. So it’s totally not the same thing. You’re buying this right? What’s that? You don’t give a flying squirrel’s ass anyway? Oh thank God. Because I forgot I was supposed to write something this week, so I just threw some garbage together at the last minute. These songs really are good mix tape closers though, I swear.
