It’s the weekend folks, and that means for a great deal of us our responsibilities go out the window; we can go out and party! What better way to hit up the town than by atttending some great musical events across the city of Austin? We’ll go through a quick run through of great shows we think you should at least consider attending, if you’re up for a night on the town.

Friday:

Top 15 Austin Albums of 2013

Man. Austin had a pretty incredible year; it was a far better year than I’ve encountered recently, making my ears, mind and heart quite proud of our hometown. While it’s obviously difficult to get in on every single band in Austin, I made a list of the albums that were most impactful throughout the year, 2013. I purposefully left off EPs and singles, not because I didn’t enjoy those, but because this is a list of top ALBUMS! Show Review: Crystal Antlers @ the Mohawk (10.19)

Sometimes Austin can disappoint you. I don’t know if it’s the post-ACL hangover or the onset of cold weather, but I was expecting a sold out crowd for Crystal Antlers on Saturday night, especially after the release of their excellent Nothing is Real LP. Show Pics: Nada Surf @ La Zona Rosa (6/29)

Third show of the week was at La Zona Rosa. Had to run solo for this one, made it easy to get through the crowd, my stage space locked down by a Lone Star bribe to a group of people in town from all over Texas to see Nada Surf together; no photo pit, but still a three song limit.

We were treated to Austin’s The Zoltars and San Fran’s Waters as openers before Nada Surf played a twenty-three song set.

Show Preview: Strange Boys @ Mohawk (5/3)

It’s a bit of slower week for live music in Austin, when you compare it to the craziness that was the last couple of weeks anyway. A solid option for to appease your live music hunger is a show going down at Mohawk on Thursday night with local veterans The Strange Boys. Now these guys have earned some praise outside of town, but they still stay true to Austin and play around the city whenever they can. The undercard of this show is also nice with up and comers The Zoltars going second and fellow local buzz band Leopold & His Fiction up first. Just do it.

Friday Top 5: Austin Artists to Watch in 2012

Usually the year begins in January, but I typically don’t get my musical gears started until after SXSW. So I started thinking about the Austin scene, and honestly, I think it’s really struggling right now (and I don’t quite know who to blame). But, I wanted to give a shout out to five bands that I think are going to make a huge impact this year in Austin and/or Texas, at least that’s what I’m hoping to see from them. These aren’t in any particular order, so just go with it, and if you see that one of these bands is playing…do Austin a favor and actually go watch them play. Oh, and we included one Houston act because they’re here all the time and we love them. Deal with it.

New Years Eve is upon us, and I doubt any of you people have really solid plans for what you’re doing to celebrate. Well, let us assist you in that department with news of a party we’re helping sponsor going down at Cheer Up Charlies on the East Side. The show features an awesome “locals only” line-up in the form of Gold Spine, TV Torso, Ringo Deathstarr, Young Girls, Marmalakes, Sleep Good, The Zoltars, The Sour Notes and a Mouthfeel DJ set to end the night. Giveaways will also be handed out out in between each set by Fricano’s Deli, Strut Boutique, Birds Barbershop, Tiffs Treats, and The Highball.
