Show Preview: Carl Sagans Skate Shoes + Vampyre

carlsaganIf you’re living in Austin, you might be tired of that old “Austin music is dying” retort; I know I am. So how do we stop it? You go out on Thursday and support local bands! Tonight you can catch Carl Sagan’s Skate Shoes headlining over at Vegas, fresh off the release of their excellent self-titled LP. Plus, help put a little money in the pocket of Vampyre, who are about to head out on the road, which is the hardest part for Austin acts sometimes. Oh, and did you know Foreign Mothers have been back at the live rock lately? Well, they are…and they play on this bill tonight. All kick started by the fire burning of Sherman’s March. So come out to Hotel Vegas tonight…show starts at 10 PM.

**There’s also word that a tour-only cassette will be available at tonight’s show!

Flavorsound Class of ’16 @ Barracuda (8.12)

flavorsavorI get it. Being a musician is hard, owning a venue is hard. But that’s anywhere in the world, even in Austin. But, while we have struggles here in town, we also have an e abundance of incredible acts popping up left and right. Flavorsound has organized a Class of 2016 Tape Compilation of the new bands that burst forth this year…including some of the acts on ATH Records like Plantation Band and Mean Jolene. It’s surely not an end all – be all list, but there’s great finds on the tape. So to celebrate, they’re throwing a release show at Barracuda tomorrow night featuring many of the acts…Planet Manhood, Lola Tried, Oozer, Mean Jolene, Vampyre and Sherman’s March. Stop by and check out some of the new sounds coming out of Austin. And if you live abroad, check out the Tape HERE or stream below.

ATX Spotlight: Stream the Vampyre EP

vampyreIt’s been an overwhelming year for Austin music…tons of really great releases…and this Vampyre EP is one that’s been thrown my way by several friends, so I sat down to spend some time with Death Dream Kingdom (I). It’s three blistering songs of noise rock, not unlike Death From Above, which you can imagine makes for an incredible live show. The words are delivered in such a manner that you can picture singer Brandon Brooker stalking the stage, interacting with the audience like very few can do. It’s easy to get pigeonholed in this city, but don’t think that’s happening to these guys any time soon. Check out their EP below.
