Show Preview: War on Drugs @ Emos (10/18)

Date Tuesday, October 18th
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $10 from Ticket Web

As our time runs out on Emos Red River, we’ve got to take advantage of the great shows still left at the venue; Tuesday night’s set definitely fits the bill.  Philadelphia’s War on Drugs returns to Austin to promote the release of another solid album, Slave Ambient.  Last time they played in town, I had a great time, as their live sound provides a slightly different twist than the recorded material.  The opening acts aren’t anything to ignore either, with Purling Hiss set to follow Carter Tanton, who will be releasing his new record on local label Western Vinyl.  Seems like this is the place to be, so we’ll see you there.

New Song from Carter Tanton

You might have seen this tracking floating around last week, but I wanted to give it some more attention, as it’s such a deserving track.  Carter Tanton spends a lot of his time playing with Lower Dens, but you wouldn’t be able to tell after listening to this lead single from his upcoming record, Freeclouds; the record will be in stores on November 1st via Austin’s own Western Vinyl. From the get go, there’s this brightness to the song filtering beneath the vocal.  There’s something really familiar about it, though I can’t place it precisely, greatness perhaps?  Regardless of what it reminds you of, this song will surely be playing around you for the rest of the week.

New Music From EDM

The guys in EDM are completing the circle of life and returning to our local label Western Vinyl for their new release after being away for over 10 years.  In that span after their debut, the band formerly known as Early Day Miners released 5 records for large indie label Secretly Canadian.  Their return album to WV, Night People, will hit streets next week on July 5th and features 9 new songs from Dan Burton and company. Until then, we’ve been given the go ahead to post this new single “Hold Me Down” that’s subtle in approach while still generating a memorable pop tune.

New Music from Luke Temple

By now, it would seem that Luke Temple is a household name, or at least with the recent success of his main role in Here We Go Magic.  But, unlike the offering with his group, Luke Temple’s new solo record, Don’t Act Like You Don’t Care, has a bit of a vibe that’s all over the map.  While it’s not as focused as his other works, it clearly demonstrates the incredible range Temple maintains as a songwriter.  This opening track will definitely venture down a bit of a country path, but that’s not the feel of the entire ride you’ll be getting when Western Vinyl releases the album  on August 30th.  Trust me, there are some spectacular gems on here, so you’ll want to get familiar with the man now.

New Reworking by Sharon Van Etten & Glass Ghost

After SXSW we raved and raved about Sharon Van Etten; the combination of beauty in appearance and voice just floored us.  Looking around the net yesterday I came across this amazing gem over at Westerny Vinyl, which is a reworking of Glass Ghost‘s “Like a Diamond” with Sharon singing the vocals.  Originally the song came out in 09’ on Idol Omen, but this reworking is incredible (not that the original wasn’t).  Sharon’s vocal delivery here is exactly the reason we came to fall for her, contrasted perfectly with stark instrumentation from Glass Ghost. What a perfect track .

SXSW Interviews: Secret Cities

Keeping up with some of our previews for the upcoming crazy SXSW festival, today we’ll focus on up and coming band Secret Cities.  We fell in love with these guys last year when they released their debut LP Pink Graffiti and have been following them ever since.  Lucky for us, band member Charlie Gokey was kind enough to answer some questions about his band and their upcoming sophomore effort.  Follow the jump for his responses.

New Music From Secret Cities

It’s fairly obvious that we here at ATH are big fans of Secret Cities and the sweet tunes they’ve been brining our way over the last year or so.  So only about a year removed from their highly under-appreciated debut LP from last year, the band is looking to release their sophomore effort this Spring on Western Vinyl.  New album Strange Hearts will be available on March 29th and features this new single “Love Crime”.  It shows a whole lot of promise and makes me think you might want to pick up this new album come March.

New Tunes from Balmorhea

Austin’s favorite, well one of the many, instrumental band, Balmorhea, are releasing some new tunes for you to grab. The Candor/Clamor 7″ is hitting the streets on Western Vinyl, and it shows a newer sound for the group.  They’re including new instruments, such as marimbas.  It definitely makes them sound a bit more exciting, although part of me wants to see them just get really dark and mess things up, but that’s just one man’s love for discordant instrumental moments.  All in all, the band continues to show interesting progressive moves forward, making this an interesting purchase, as it will clearly document the band’s exploration of new sonic territory.  Never a bad thing.

New Music From Secret Cities

Secret Cities is a band that quietly released their debut LP Pink Graffiti on Western Vinyl earlier this year.  Receiving a 4 star rating from us means we’ll be paying attention to you when new material comes our way.  New material is just what we’re getting from the band by way of this new song “On Holiday”.  The haze pop filled jam is just a single release that also includes a cover of Ellie Greenwich’s song ” You Don’t Know”. That song is available for purchase and download on iTunes right now!

New Music From J. Tillman

Let’s be honest here, J. Tillman has been doing his solo thing for a lot longer than he really became famous as the drummer for Fleet Foxes.  The guy already has 6 solo albums and is now about to put out his 7th, Singing Axe, on Western Vinyl on September 14th.  That’s pretty prolific if you’re asking me.  You’ll only be able to pick up that new one on vinyl or digital download, so that means no CDs you people that are living in 2002.  Below you’ll find the first single from the upcoming LP “Three Sisters”.  (via)
