Now in it’s 3rd year of existence, Xemumba will be making it’s annual appearance this weekend at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard (check that map if you don’t know where that is). This is an all day event with cheap ticket prices and tons of bands to wet your appetite for latin flavor. A full list of bands can be seen on the attached fancy flier created by Bemba Entertainment (also producers of the event). You can get tickets at the door for $15 if you don’t buy them in advance. Also, check out some coverage we provided of last year’s fest at Mohawk.
The Latin music festival known as Xemumba can best be summarized as an audio/visual extravaganza that takes hold of your senses and never lets go. One minute you’re sipping on a beer listening to the latest salsa coming out of Cuba, and then your running upstairs to watch the UT ballet folklorico cuttin’ a rug. Oh and then you have tasty South American treats to munch on, while watching a Spanish documentary made by local film makers. Xemumba even had opportunities to help out less fortunate young hispanic girls in the community. Not impressed yet? After the jump is a quick review of each band we saw on Friday at the festival with photos (Saturday unfortunately was postponed to a later date. We’ll of course let you know when the event is rescheduled).
The last of our posts leading up to the Xemumba Festival this weekend features another Austin Band, The Crying Monkeys. Consider the crying monkeys ambassadors of the amazing Brazilian formed musical style choro. They kick off Friday evening’s performances with what is sure to be an amazing set. Also, don’t forget to buy those tickets to Xemumba before time runs out.
Part three of our build up to Xemumba Festival features local Austin band Los Bad Apples. Los Bad Apples plays a high-energy fusion of Hip Hop with Reggaeton, Cumbia, Flamenco, Samba & Salsa. Band members include the sweet songstress, Anita Benner, critically acclaimed MC Zeale who was a finalist in the World Rap Championships of 2007, as well as former members of Kumbia Kings, Menudo & Grupo Fantasma. Los Bad Apples will take stage on the Friday evening of Xemumba. Don’t forget to read our original post on Xemumba or check out a few Los Bad Apples songs from the band’s myspace page.
This week we spotlight Austin band Mariachi Revolución as part of our Xemumba festival features. Mariachi is another Xemumba alum performing on both nights of the latin music festival. Each week, we here at Austin Town Hall will be featuring one of the many great artists playing the late September Xemumba Latin Music Festival. This week, we cast the spotlight on Academicos da Opera. Academicos, a return act from last years Xemumba festival, are a group of about two or three dozen performers who will bring the pulse of Brazil, Samba, to Xemumba. The group will be playing that Brazilian Samba both nights at the Festival. Be sure to read our original post about Xemumba and buy your tickets. You can also check out an excerpt of that famous Samba music below which should get you jacked up for the show.
