Chris Cornell & Timbaland

No, the title of this post is not a typo.  Chris Cornell is actually teaming up with Timbaland for his new solo album Scream due out sometime this September.  Even better, you can hear 5 new songs off the album over on the planet radio website.  I have always been a fan of Soundgarden and most of Audioslave’s material but I’m not sure I’ll be on board for this venture.  It’s…. interesting to say the least.  Let’s get some good comments on this one.

  • This is fucking god awful. This is beyond god awful.

How has Chris Cornell not figured out by now he needs to get Soundgarden back together? Im sure Kim Tayhil is just snorting coke off of hookers somewhere, but I refuse to believe he is busy with anything else.

  • Yikes. Sounds like One Republic.

I miss the Audioslave disclaimer: “All sounds made by guitar, bass, drums, and vocals”

Add auto-tune, and casio keyboard to that list for this one.

  • I’m not in love with what I’m hearing, but Cornell could sing the ABCs for 40 minutes, call it an album, and I’d plunk down money for it.

Face it: Grunge died over a decade ago. It may be the best potential career move, but Soundgarden just isn’t getting back together. And another album with the backing band would just sound like a second-rate Audioslave. The biggest gripe about Carry On was that it had no real direction; lots of cool ideas, but nothing tying them together. At least by working with Timbaland, he’s choosing a direction, and it’s not even the worst possible one (we could’ve had an album of coffeehouse-style 80s covers).

I blame the fact that Cornell apparently didn’t write all the songs here. Based on what I read, Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic) has a songwriting credit on “Long Gone”, and probably a few others. That’s why it sounded like OneRepublic, and thus feels watered down.

PS bRETT’s thoughts on the Audioslave disclaimer are echoed here.

  • I agree with TJ. Soundgarden get back together & Audioslave making more music wouldn’t be that great, but this? I think I’d prefer the coffeehouse 80s covers. I can’t honestly imagine a worse direction than this.

  • I really like the new songs and think that it’s great that Chris is taking a risk. He’s been playing music for over 20 years so he has to change it up every once in a while. I love Soundgarden and Audioslave but we will never get that back again. I agree with TJ, Chris Cornell could sing anything and it would sound incredible. I’m just happy that as a fan he is still making music and touring. I never thought that I would get to hear Soundgarden songs live again, and he plays everything on his tour!

  • I think there’s a lot of overly harsh criticism on “Scream” before we’ve even had a chance to hear the full album – and Chris has repeatedly said it’s meant to be listened to “in full, as an album”, rather than as the singles we demand (as an impatient public). He’s also said it’s a project that “can’t be repeated – isn’t meant to be repeated”, so I think everyone who’s worried about Chris’s “sanity” should just relax a little here, give him the benefit of the doubt (JEEZ, C Cornell has AT LEAST earned that over the years), and enjoy what comes out of it. I personally love the sounds I’ve been hearing from “Scream”, and I’m not a ‘hip hop’ fan, per se, but throwing the baby out with the bathwater is just, well, WRONG!!!

  • but hw does chris cornell do smthn with timbaland???
    he’s loosing his karma,
shit i hate comerce in musik,, it kills good artists

  • I’m getting tired of the whole “this is meant to be listened to as a whole” arguement. Seriously? You are not the Brian Wilson. You are Chris Cornell/Kid Rock/whoever else. I believe that listening to these songs in the context of a full album will only make me realize that I have wasted forty minutes of my life rather than wasting three minutes.

Does Chris Cornell really see this as his “art” anymore and believe it? I don’t think so.

I’m going to go listen to Badmotorfinger.

  • Well it good to hear true criticism on his new album. I was on Facebook and made a post that said somthing to the effect of “I don’t like the new songs” but it was taken down in a matter of hours. That was dispicable, and makes me wonder if it is just marketing and trying to sell to a new market and not letting long time fans say what they feel. I hope that is not what Chris is doing, because his loyalty to true music(Not over produced computer generated BS) seems to be waining. I am all for trying new things, Like the Smashing Pumpkins, but like Billy said…If your in the buisness to sell records and not make your own music then just do an album with Timbaland. I will buy the album and listen to it, but from what I’ve heard so far, I’ll only listen to it once.

  • Interesting is a good way to put it. I don’t hate it but this is something completely different from Soundgarden for sure. Then again a few of the songs like “Watch Out” were very upbeat fast and loud enough for me to really get into it. Still, the over done techno sounds really wears on the songs and I know I’m not the only one. Chris Cornell is a rocker and he’s using his image in a completely conflicting genre so there’s no surprise to see his fans disappointed at the least.

  • Don’t worry. Chris Cornell doing something different with his voice and his life won’t jeopardize ya’ll’s terminal hipness. If you need to stay stuck in 90s grunge metal, that’s why God invented CDs. Meanwhile, let the man make new friends and do new things. Hard to imagine I know, but some people may LIKE it.

  • i hate chris cornell from now on, they r silly with their faces sayin’ ‘yo we want to make some money with something so tell chris that if he shakes his ass with the girls that could sell much’ and and this guy chris who has a blurred brain i think (!) try to sing like some popstars, so why the hell u were in Audioslave or soundgarden? this is meaningless i cant and i never will understand the point of this.. maybe i am so good at ‘be’ ing myself!

just rememberin’ the lyrics of ‘be yourself’ ..

this reminds me of vanilla ice try to became a hardcore star a little while ago..

    make music not chewing gums

  • but dont get me wrong i like justin timberlake when he’s with timbaland or nelly furtado.. i just can not believe in chris cornell

  • you really sold yourself
