ACL Preview: Mason Jennings

Mason Jennings has been through his ups and downs as a songwriter, but mostly he’s been on the ups. His incredible vocals always lead those in his mass followings, such as Issac Brock of Modest Mouse, to a pleasurable listening experience. The crowds at Austin City Limits will surely be witness to his magic when he takes to the Austin Ventures stage this Saturday at 6:30. Read more after the jump..

Mason Jennings first graced my record collection with his self-titled album, and it never left my stereo for several months. His simple approach to the world of singer-songwriters always left me wanting more. At first, he came across with a little bit of an edge, but as time has gone on, he’s polished his sound a bit more. Personally, I wish he could buff off some of the polish, but that isn’t to say that his most recent offerings don’t hold the same power; its just a matter of personal taste.

Several years ago I caught his set at ACL when he was an up-and-comer in the music scene, and I couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by his stage presence. He gave more to the crowd in the early afternoon than The Pixies would give their devoted fans later in the day. Don’t let me tell you that he is better than the aforementioned band, but I want to get across that he has a great ability to win you over in just an hour.

Another benefit of Mason is that he has several CDs he can draw from, which means that you are more likely to miss out on some of the less than desirable songs his albums sometimes throw your way. Regardless of his faults, Mason is going to play you some of the more enjoyable acoustic rock you will hear all weekend long, so be sure you check him out while he’s in our town.
