ACL Battles: LCD/Bordello/Monsters/Bazan

So every year ACL festival has a few tough choices to make when they schedule two really great bands playing at exactly the same time.  Typically we’re stuck with making a choice between two bands, but this year we have been faced with a choice between FOUR great bands.  The first thing that came to mind when I saw the ACL schedule was this huge conflict between these four heavy hitters on Saturday.  So let’s see what we have here… First up for consideration is a performance from incredible gypsy-punk band and awesome live group Gogol Bordello beginning at 6:30 on the AMD stage.  Then you have the option of stopping by the Austin Ventures stage at 6:00 for the two hour long Monsters of Folk show.  Or maybe you fancy a solid veteran songwriter in the form of David Bazan beginning at 6:40 on the BMI stage.  Last but not least, you can check out great live performers LCD Soundsystem on the Budweiser stage at 6:30.  So what’s it gonna be?  Some are saying you could maybe check out a few songs from each?  Maybe you want to check out a bit of one and then slide over to catch the end of the Monsters of Folk set?  I personally don’t like a lot of migrating during sets so I want to make a choice and stick with it.  I’m honestly still torn on this one… You guys have any insight?

  • Seen Bazan, LCD might be good performance wise, but I could care less at this point about their music. Bodello is good, but I’m going with Monsters of Folk…hoping they all doa nice Desaparecidos jam.

  • LCD is your winner. Nathan hates fun, or maybe just prefers gypsy fun… or folky fun.

LCD. Because it’s the last tour for the last album.

  • I think I may go with Lankford on this one for several reason…
    1. I have seen LCD more than once
    2. Gogol Bordello is great live but I’m not that into his music.
    3. I’ve seen some incarnation of David Bazan (solor, Pedor the Lion, etc.) more times than I care to count.
    4. I’m thinking with Monsters of Folk we’ll get somo solo MMJ and M. Ward stuff to go along with the MOF stuff.

That being said, I think I’m between LCD and Monsters of Folk.

  • Yeah, but the possibility of solo Yim Yames, m ward, connor Oberst, + the monsters of folk set… to me that isn’t as enticing in a festival setting than either Gogol or LCD.

    MMJ > Yim Yames, anyway.

And can’t you catch the end of MoF post LCD?

Can we not agree that Monsters of FOLK is the greatest band name at the festival? Can we not agree?

  • Are you kidding me? Name one decent album by LCD? That guy can’t put together an entire record to save his life. Besides, I saw Ghostland Observatory…its the same show, but with a white guy.

Gypsies? Aren’t they in danger of being moved from Spain and France? Permanently? They’ll no longer be relevant.

Lets see…Conor Oberst solo…Bright Eyes tracks, that right there puts it above the rest. On top of that, M. Ward’s solo stuff is great, and I love his voice. JJ? Well, not a huge fan, but there’s a reason LCD isn’t putting out records anymore; they’re no longer good!

  • From this position
I can see both of them
    From this position
I totally get how the decision was reached

and it goes, pow, pow pow pow pow, pow pow pow pow.

  • What’s all the fuss about?

It’s all just killin’ time to DMB…
