SXSW 2014 Interview: Pizza Time

Pizza Time is the Denver-based product of one David Pizza.  Not only does he like to rock the pizza rep, but he also spends a great deal of his time offering punk rock in Spanish.   He’s done some releases with the most excellent cats over at Burger Records (though I wonder if they had issue with the band name, but I suppose Burger Time was already taken).  Anyways, David is on his way to Austin for a great SXSW, so read on for his thoughts about the festival.

ATH: There was a lot of hubbub last year concerning corporate sponsors and pay to play and what not at SXSW. As a band, what’s your reasonfor coming to pay at the festival? What do you hope to get out of it?

David: This is my first time playing SXSW; I don’t know anything about hubbub, I just know that I visited and played in Tejas for the first time in January ’14 and I had so much fun and made friends that I miss and wanna spend time with.

ATH: For most SXSW sets, you get 30 minutes to leave a lasting impression. What’s your plan of attack? You have a set list mapped out yet?

David: I have two “albums” one is 13 minutes long and the other one is 12 minutes long I’m going to play both. and leave 5 minutes for set up and break down.

ATH: The festival caters to music fans, but food and booze are an important aspect of the fans and the bands. What’s your band’s food and beverage of choice?

David: Pizza & Tequilla

ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town. Who would you ideally like to play with of the 1000s of bands gracing our city? Make your own optimal line-up.

David: Any BURGER band I like chill vibes and chill people and they are usually a safe bet, but really I’ll play with anybody. I’m playing a show that the organization 18 Below put together with a bunch of under 18 year old kids and I played with them in January; I’m looking forward to doing it again. They are super sweet and they rip it up!

ATH: We are partial to SXSW obviously, but what festival do you feel is the best around?

David: BURGERAMA

ATH: Let’s say your band has been booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd seems angry at the world. How would your band deal with such a situation?

David: I’d make up a set. trash metal with rap vocals with a spoken word break down. And since it’s me the entire set will be in Spanish.

ATH: What’s your favorite album to come out in the last year? What’s playing in the tour bus?

David: Gap Dream “Shine Your Light” was my fave album. On the tour bus we’ll be jamming a heavy rotation of Bakersfield County (Buck Owens & Merle Haggard) and goth music. I’m touring with my best buds, LOVE COP, and they like all that depressing shit. I like it too, so hopefully a lot of The Cure and The Jesus & Mary Chain.

ATH: The digital age is upon us, like it or not. What are your band’s thoughts on streaming services like spotify, pandora, etc.? Blow em all up? Or embrace the future?

David: EMBRACE THE FUTURE OR GO FUCK YOURSELF!!!

ATH: Day parties have replaced showcases for music discovery? Is the conference really completely upside-down?

David: I rock n’ roll all night and party everyday I don’t have time for conferences that sounds too much like work. i hate work.

ATH: Flatstock is a crowd favorite. Have you ever been to browse? Find a print to buy? Find a print from one of your shows you didn’t know existed?

David: First time I hear about Flatstock; Imma go browse it right now. L8rz Sk8rz.
