Stay Tuned for Project #ATX6 — Coming to ATH Next Week (8.12)

ProjectATX6ImgI love interesting film endeavors, especially when they relate to music.  So, when we were offered the chance to help roll out the first Episode of Project #ATX6, we jumped at the chance.  The documentary series follows 6 Austin musicians as they travel from Austin to various International festivals, exporting their music beyond the confines of our fair city.  Plus, the series is going to be organically grown, premiering on various Internet outlets to spread the word on the project.  The six featured artists are Dana Falconberry, Aisha Burns, Carson Mchone, Mrs. Glass, Leo Rondeau and Jesse Moore.  You can read more about the project HERE.  And!!! Next week we’ll premiere the first episode on August 12th, 8 AM CST…so stay tuned.

Check out the trailer below.

Hear Part Time’s Track off Their Split with Gap Dream

jameyThere were hints of a softer side to Davida Loca on his last Part Time release, PDA, but you get a full glimpse with his shimmering synth pop tune that plays his part of the 7″ split with Gap Dream. It’s a relaxed tune, not moving quickly, but you get a delightful bounce through the electronic work he’s done on this tune.  It should whet your appetite enough to order the release from Burger Records, but you can also grab it from them live when both bands go on tour together throughout August/September, including a date at Hotel Vegas on August 28th.

Summer Tune from Pool Holograph

PHpromo1Summer time is about letting loose and having fun.  Whether that’s hanging at the pool with your friends or sitting beach-side with your family, you’re supposed to relax and let everything go.  This tune from Pool Holograph is perfect for that sentiment; it’s filled with an exuberance that’s playful in every way, especially the way the cymbals are ridden throughout the track.  The vocals add a nice touch, bursting forth during the chorus into a delightful croon.  This is the first single off the group’s forthcoming album, Mortals, which should hit this Fall.

Austin Spotlight: Another Spray Paint Tune

Spray-PaintA little over a week ago we tossed up a tune that was from the forthcoming album from Austin’s Spray Paint.  But, while we’re waiting for what’s sure to be another rad record from the band, they’ve also announced a new 7″ for Upset the Rhythm that’s coming out next week.  I’m loving the discordant pluck that rides along this tune, while the pummeling beat just pounds away.  Lyrics accompany the first half of the song, and the last few seconds, but the middle is filled with instrumental pacing, of the dangerous sort.  Not sure if “Cussin” will appear on the next LP, or if it’s just a stand-alone 7″, but it’s another reason for people to continue their praise of the Austin three-piece.

Soft Touch from Musee Mecanique

mmWhile my tastes this week have been dominated by some rocking tunes, there’s still a few spots left for moving pieces of careful composition.  Enter Musee Mecanique.  They’ve just released this sprawling piece of orchestral pop, and it’s the perfect thing to help put your spirit at east.  Whether it’s the gentle quality of the vocals or the burst of the horns before the song cuts short, there’s something special that makes the song repeatedly appealing. The band will release Shores of Sleep on August 25th, which is perfect timing for my return to the real world.

New Music from WISH

wishOne of the tracks that popped up earlier this week and caught my ear was this little number by WISH, primarily the project of Kyle Connolly. The rhythm section pushes the song forward, pounding drums on the floor, but it was really the aspect of a warm wash atop it all that grabbed me.  I guess it’s not quite psych rock, but it’s not quite dream pop either; it’s somewhere floating in between. They’ve also got a video for the track below you can check out HERE.  The self-titled album from the project will be released on August 28th via Hand Drawn Dracula.

Mesmerizing New Track From Silver Firs

b7206d73-0200-4ec9-a8d9-71935176a766Silver Firs is another band who have received some positive press on this here website once or twice before in the past.  I’ve always enjoyed this sort of earthy, tribal and mesmerizing sounds they seem to create over and over again.  This new song “Icarus” is another one of those tracks that is sure to evoke images of the beautiful Swiss countryside.  You will definitely want to pay attention to this band in the future (if you weren’t already).

This track is available on EP #2 due out August 8th.

The Rosebuds – Sand + Silence

rRating: ★★★☆☆

Whenever your album is produced by a big name in the indie rock world, let alone Justin Vernon, there’s going to be a great deal of attention drawn to you by this simple fact, and not by the catalogue you’ve already generated as a group that’s been around for 13 years now. I was impressed with Kelly Crisp and Ivan Howard’s last effort on Loud Planes Fly Low and thus, regardless of big names, my expectations were high for Sand + Silence, but perhaps a bit too high.

When I heard a single for this album, “Blue Eyes,” I was pretty stoked to hear the rest of the album; it seemed like the band was stepping into this surf rock tinged version of their previous sound. Instead of garage rock as the base for the surfy jams, this track offered up a pop base for those surf rock guitars to move around in. It’s a downright jam; Ivan Howard’s vocals warble and soar, backed with Kelly Crisp’s arcing “ooh’s,” and the jangly guitars to make it a beach tune to throw on your latest mix.

However, when listening to the rest of this album, it’s hard to find this continual current, or even a continual current of enticing tunes. I find myself being pulled back to the music once every third track or so, getting interested in a track, only for the band to switch it up for the next song. There’s something be said about creating a collection of songs that are different but somehow work together in some fashion, but the tracks sprawl out far in different directions. That being said, I still really enjoyed “Looking For,” where you have the beach vibe returning in the guitar parts as well as the fading “ahhs.” On this song we also encounter Crisp’s small presence on this album via the form of her backing vocals. Here, some of the enticement of infectious pop tunes that The Rosebuds started to reinvent on their past album.

While there are some nice tracks on Sand + Silence, I really am missing some vital cohesiveness that would make this album go from good to grand. The beginning of the album feels a bit lost and muddy, and while the ending starts to pick up on that subtle surf vibe that “Blue Eyes” sparked, it’s hard not to skip over the first few numbers, after “In My Teeth” to get to the goods. Perhaps this is a record that requires some extra time for a deeper undercurrent to arise. See for yourself.
