A Night Out: Citadel, Deep Cuts, Shivery Shakes (1/29)
I love the fact that we can just head out any night in this town and find not one good local show, but several. had a new lens to play around with so it seemed the perfect excuse to head out. Out I went last Thursday night and I got to check out Citadel‘s second show ever, Deep Cuts in town from Houston and our ATH faves Shivery Shakes.
I will take you through the night with a few notes and plenty of pics right after the break…
Citadel is Nathan Patterson, Michael Mayfield and Kendall Clark though I would say Nathan is the driving force. The Parish was my first stop to catch them opening for Vacationer. It is a layered sound, gazy, but there is a bit of a pop sensibility hiding underneath. The band has a limited catalog so far, but you can listen to a few songs from their Soundcloud. A few technical glitches took Nathan and company temporarily out of their groove, but the crowd was super friendly and stuck with the band through their set. …and kudos to the fans of Vacationer; they came out early and in force which tested Citadel‘s nerves.
I bailed out on Vacationer (saw them open for Tennis a few years back) to try to catch a little Casual Strangers set before Deep Cuts‘ set. More proof of our scene’s depth. What a lovely gift to receive as a warm-up to Deep Cuts.
..and as for Deep Cuts, eclectic, percussive and fun. Does every band need a guy to play extra drums and cowbell? No. But it helps and works for them. Thanks to the number of dudes on stage there is depth and the poppy jams just exude fun with polish. I see why they are building momentum in Houston and that momentum will spill over to Austin.
Finally. Shivery Shakes. Hey guys. Sup?
