SXSW Interview: Barrie

One of the great things about SXSW for music fans is that you get a chance to sample what’s coming your way in the next few months. Today, we catch up with Barrie, a highly rated act (by me) who will come to the festival with their forthcoming LP, Happy to Be Here in their pocket. For some of us, it will be our first chance to hear some of the new tracks…so read on below for what’s in store.

ATH: Whats the name of the band/group? Where are you from?

Barrie: Were called Barrie and were from Brooklyn

ATH: Describe your groups sound.

Barrie: Slightly fucked up classic pop

ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases from 2019?

Barrie: We just put out a song called Clovers 🙂 Its the first single from our album Happy To Be Here, which is coming out May 3.

ATH: For most SXSW sets, you get 30 minutes to leave a lasting impression. Whats your plan of attack? You have a set list mapped out yet?

Barrie: We’re excited to try out a bunch of different sets, maybe some left field covers. We’ll be coming off a long support tour so we’re gonna be keen to experiment.

ATH: Lets say your band has been booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd seems angry at the world. How would your band deal with such a situation?

Barrie: We like trying to win over a crowd and honestly in those situations we usually just try to make it fun for ourselves. And that usually makes it fun for people watching?

ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town. Of the 1000+ bands coming into town, who would you ideally like to play with. What band friends will be here?

Barrie: We have a lot friends going this year – Sedona, Claud, Cautious Clay, Field Trip, probably more we havent even realized yet. Excited to see Black Midi, Boogarins, Crumb, Flohio, tbh had to stop at page G there are too many. Also, the Justice short film.

ATH: What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?

Barrie: It’s crazy eclectic. Smerz, Rosalia, Nathy Peluso, Yoko Ono, Forest West Drive, Orinoco Flow on loop

ATH: Describe your perfect festival, real or not? Whos headlining? Wheres it take place? Etc.

Barrie: Picture this…Pablo Escobars private island.

ATH: Whats on the bands rider? If were bringing you food and booze, what can we bring you?

Barrie: Mezcal, bbq, and big league chew.

ATH: The band gets to create their own taco pop-up shop at SXSW? Whats the name, and what sort of tacos will you have? Any sides?

Barrie: Al Pastor Papis Poppin Pop-Up Tacos serving strictly meat tacos by a shirtless Spurge.
