SXSW Interview: No Win
Here comes our interview with No Win, who will play SXSW, then drop their debut LP via Dangerbird at the end of March. It’s a busy time of year for them (and for us), so we figured we’d let you slide right in and get to know the band with their answers below.
ATH: Whats the name of the band/group? Where are you from?
NW:NO WIN from beautiful Los Angeles, CA
ATH: Describe your groups sound.
NW: Indie rock a la GBV, Superchunk, Superdrag. Hopefully?
ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases from 2019?
NW:Weve released a few singles from our upcoming debut album Downey out Mar. 22 on Dangerbird Records
ATH: For most SXSW sets, you get 30 minutes to leave a lasting impression. Whats your plan of attack? You have a set list mapped out yet?
NW: Ive been working with a local hat maker to craft the perfect headpiece. I think the right combo of sequins and crystals will help to open a direct channel into the limbic system of SXSW show-goers. (the part of the brain responsible for storing and recalling memories)
ATH: Lets say your band has been booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd seems angry at the world. How would your band deal with such a situation?
NW: Enjoy the green room amenities (assuming there are any), play quickly, kick rocks.
ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town. Of the 1000+ bands coming into town, who would you ideally like to play with. What band friends will be here?
NW: We have a show with our label mates Criminal Hygiene and honestly as long as I avoid seeing them it will be a great success.
ATH: What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?
NW: Los Bolos, GBV, Power Ballads, Frank Oceans Moon River, that sound my jaw makes when I chew
ATH: Describe your perfect festival, real or not? Whos headlining? Wheres it take place? Etc.
NW: Renn faire, Davids 10,000 maniacs shirt opens for GBV, held in my backyard
ATH: Whats on the bands rider? If were bringing you food and booze, what can we bring you?
NW: 2 for$12 Rolling Rock 12 packs purchased from Happys Liquor in Glassell Park, Los Angeles and shipped in to wherever were playing. The trail mix from Target that includes peanut butter chips and chocolate chips and cranberries and m&ms, tacos, a sampling of your city’s attempt at Cuban cuisine (rope vieja required), one vintage tiffany&Co broach
ATH: The band gets to create their own taco pop-up shop at SXSW? Whats the name, and what sort of tacos will you have? Any sides?
NW: NO MAMES (tacos by NO WIN) Menu items include: the David Jerkovich (Chorizo, shredded cabbage, vinegar, salt&pepper its like sauerkraut), The Danny Nog (slow roasted shredded pork shoulder, mojo criollo, black beans, fried plantains), The Jeff Enzor (Tater tots smothered in a cheese sauce, topped with a ground beef based chili), The Juan Lian (12 hour brisket, SHREDDED lettuce, a spicy and smooth bbq sauce)
