SXSW Interview: Moaning
We’re really excited for Moaning to drop their new LP, Uneasy Laughter…and instead of the traditional LP release show in LA, the band have opted to spend their whole week in Austin during SXSW playing the shit out of those songs. From what we’ve heard so far, it rules…plus it never hurts to have Sub Pop in your corner. Get to know the band after the jump!
ATH: Whats the name of the band/group? Where are you from?
Moaning: Our band is called Moaning and were from Los Angeles.
ATH: Describe your groups sound.
Moaning:It sort of sounds like the band name. Sexy music for sad people…or sad music for sexy people? Ive heard people call it post-punk, new wave, and shoegaze. I think its probably all of these things and none of them too.
ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases from 2020?
Moaning: We have a new album called Uneasy Laughter coming out March 20th on Sub Pop Records. It actually comes out during SXSW! Pre-order that shit!
ATH: For most SXSW sets, you get 30 minutes to leave a lasting impression. Whats your plan of attack? You have a set list mapped out yet?
Moaning: Dang! Youre stressing me out! Were going to do our thing and hopefully find the people who like it. Going to keep it authentic. Were playing mostly new music. Theres a lot of new interesting arrangements and gadgets. I hope people like it.
ATH: Lets say your band has been booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd is growing ancy. How would your band deal with such a situation?
Moaning: We would play the best show we could possibly play. We play the same set to 1,000 people that we do for 10 people. You have to do your best for the people who are there! No time for diva musicians.
ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town. Of the 1000+ bands coming into town, who would you ideally like to play with. Which band friends will be here?
Moaning: Theres so many amazing artists playing. Its a little overwhelming. I think our friends Automatic and Shopping are going. They both rule!
ATH: What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?
Moaning: Everyone in the band has been really into the new Angel Olsen record (who hasnt!). Ive been reading Our Band Could Be Your Life so Ive been revisiting punk bands I liked as a kid. Been blasting Mission of Burma in my room lately.
ATH: Describe your perfect festival, real or not? Whos headlining? Wheres it take place? Etc.
Moaning: The Cure is headlining. The floor is pavement, there is shade everywhere, and lots of places to sit. Its extremely spacious and the food is surprisingly cheap. Its in LA walking distance from my house. Tickets were really expensive but I got in for free. This is also the beginning of my most common sexual fantasy…
ATH: Whats on the bands rider? If were bringing you food and booze, what can we bring you?
Moaning: Sparkling water, gummy bears, and Some Kind of Monster on DVD.
ATH: The band gets to create their own taco pop-up shop at SXSW? Whats the name, and what sort of tacos will you have? Any sides?
Moaning:Great question. It would be called El Moanin Taco (named after El Flamin Taco in LA). Well definitely have el pastor and carne asada. Some vegan options because thats the right thing to do. Avocado salsa on the side. Oh and Jalapenos. Duh!
