SXSW Interview: Sammy Brue

The annual SXSW conference always has up-and-coming talent on the roster; Billie Eilish was there long before she broke out to the masses. A bit of a different genre, but 18 year-old Sammy Brue is in the same spot; he’s a young musician just trying to get his name out there before his new album Crash Test Kid drops on June 12. Meet Sammy below!

ATH: Whats the name of the artist/band/group? Where are you from?
SB: My name is Sammy Brue and I live in Ogden, Utah.
ATH: Describe your sound.
SB: Folk rock.
ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases from 2020?
SB: Just released two new singles, the album title track Crash Test Kid and Teenage Mayhem.
ATH: For most SXSW sets, you get 30 minutes to leave a lasting impression. Whats your plan of attack? You have a set list mapped out yet?
SB: Its gonna just be me and a guitar so I just have to leave my soul on the stage for everyone to see.
ATH: Lets say your band has been booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd is growing ancy. How would your band deal with such a situation?
SB: Stomping, sweating, yelling, and pretty much not caring about your environment and just tuning into the love for the craft.
ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town. Of the 1000+ bands coming into town, who would you ideally like to play with. Which band friends will be here?
SB: Im gonna see a buddy that used to live with me and my family and his name is Branson Anderson.
ATH: What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?
SB: Ive been listening to so much Michael Kiwanuka because I just got off tour with him.
ATH: Describe your perfect festival, real or not? Whos headlining? Wheres it take place? Etc.
SB: Well Ive never headlined a festival soooo…
ATH: Whats on the bands rider? If were bringing you food and booze, what can we bring you?
SB: Some water and grapes and some Nature Valley bars.
ATH: The band gets to create their own taco pop-up shop at SXSW? Whats the name, and what sort of tacos will you have? Any sides
SB: I could never make my own taco stand, so I will leave it to the masters of tacos.
