SXSW Interviews: Grandmas House

Are You Ready!? If you follow our site, you may have seen us going a bit crazy with 1-2 SXSW interviews each day. Don’t follow us regularly? Well welcome to the madness! I hope that we’ve been helping you wade through the madness with some of these spotlights featuring artists we think you should be checking out during the festival week. Today I’ve got a good one here with Bristol based outfit Grandmas House who are definitely climbing my must see list quickly! Hit the jump to check out their responses along with some tunes.

ATH: Whats the name of the band/group? Where are you from?

GH: Were a three piece called Grandmas House and were based in Bristol, UK!

ATH: Describe your groups sound.

GH: Loud, punky and catchy. We like to incorporate our love of various genres into our music but keeping it punky and straightforward!

ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases for 2022?

GH: We released our debut EP at the end of last year and weve been working on our next EP release which is going to come out at some point this year!

ATH: Everyones been focused on the negative aspects of the last few years? What are a few good things that came about for you as an individual or the band as a whole during the last two pandemic-stricken years?

GH: As a band weve been very lucky the last couple years – we all live together which allowed us to stay creative together and keep writing and playing. We were gigging non-stop right up to the pandemic which means we didnt have that much time to focus on writing new material. Once we all had to stay at home it meant we could explore that more!

ATH: Why play SXSW? Whats the draw for the band? What about this festival will bring you to Austin?

GH: Playing SXSW has always been a dream and we cant believe its coming true so soon!! Weve heard amazing things about it and cant wait to get completely immersed into the art! We love that its spread over Austin as well which means well be able to explore the city and hopefully discover a lot of new bands!

ATH: Lets say your band has booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd is growing ancy. How would your band deal with such a situation?

GH: Wed absolutely give it our everything as we love performing! Im hoping we could convince the antsy crowd and just play music people enjoy! Weve played many different venues with different quality of sound so we could definitely deal with that – as long as you get the crowd on your side everyone has a good time and thats the main thing.

ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town, but if you could create your own perfect festival, who would you have playing? Would it have a sick name? Where would it take place?

GH: We would love to create a festival somewhere beautiful in the UK, and our line up would definitely include Los Bitchos, Katy J Pearson and Big Thief. The name would definitely include Grandmas Grandmas Fest maybe?

ATH: What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?

GH: Weve all been obsessed with Los Bitchos, we just went to see them play as well! Their music is just so fun and catchy (theyre also playing SXSW and we cant wait!!). We also listen to a lot of Dry Cleaning, Sinead OBrien and Declan McKenna on tour!

ATH: Theres been a lot of discussion about Spotify and streaming and all that these last few monthswhere does the band stand? Whats your solution?

GH: Its horrendous how little Spotify pays its users and its frustrating as we still want to use it as its such a great way to get your music heard. I guess one of the solutions weve turned to is pushing our physical copies of our EP as its a great way to earn more money from our music! Were hoping that if people keep speaking up about this issue something will change one day.

ATH: The band gets to create their own food truck to take on the road. Whats it called, and what are you serving?

GH: It would be called Grandmas Kitchen and wed serve all vegan treats. Our specialities would be vegan mac n cheese and vegan kebabs!

Thanks again to Grandmas House for making this time to speak with us! Here is a recent single for you to check out, “Girl”.
