Meet the SXSW Band: Dream, Ivory

Well SXSW has somehow snuck up on us once again and things will be kicking off in less than a month now with the usual mass influx of artists coming to town. I’m sure everyone has heard the chatter this year about artist fair pay, and we totally support the movement in full, but in the immediate future we have bands coming to town, and we want show our support however we can. One way we can do that as a music site is to give them a platform to introduce themselves and even get their opinion on the fight for fair pay. Today we are kicking off our initial coverage with an introduction and interview featuring SoCal based band Dream, Ivory. Hit the jump for interview, music, and initial set times.

What’s the name of the band/group? Where are you from?
Dream, Ivory // California
Describe your group’s sound using only adjectives or superlatives.
euphoric, melancholy, safe, introspective
What was your most recent release? Any planned releases for 2023?

Our most recent release was a stripped down version of our debut album About A Boy from last year. We plan on creating a ton more music this year and diving into different sounds/moods.

Why play SXSW? What’s the draw for the band? What about this festival will bring you to Austin?
A lot of the bands we look up to have had sick sets at SXSW so it was always kind of a mental goal we had. It feels pretty surreal now being an official artist. We also have never been to Texas before and a lot of our fan base is from there so it would be sick to give them an opportunity to see us live.
There are tons of bands coming into town, but if you could create your own perfect festival, who would you have playing? Would it have a sick name? Where would it take place? Feel free to disregard the rules of time and space.
It would definitely take place somewhere where the weather is decent like Southern California in the spring or summer. The name would have to be cool like “Forever Festival”. As for artists playing (disregarding the rules of time and space), that would be a very hard question. Probably older bands like Cocteau Twins, The Pulsars, The Sundays and more.
What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?
We have been listening to various genres and artists ranging from Pearly Drops to Blur to Bladee to Beach House to U2 to many more. We also find it refreshing to put on podcasts every once in a while. Our fav currently is probably Song Exploder.
Obviously you have seen or heard about the issues coming up this year about fair pay for artists at SXSW? Care to offer any insight or comment?

In short, we feel that artists do deserve fair pay when it comes to playing shows/gigs and while it does seem like performing is all fun (which it is for the most part) and easy, performing still takes a lot of time, work, and effort. There’s a lot of preparation that goes on before putting on a show.

We’ve been seeing more and more artists get into the food and beverage game, whether it’s pierogis from Pavement or Deftones’ beer. If you ever got into the game, what would be your food or beverage and what would it be called?

A red wine would be cool. Like a nice Cabernet Sauvignon that could be titled off of our song “Red Love”. Classy.

Thanks again lads for making this time to speak with us. See you in Austin!

Here are the dates, times and locations we know about so far on the Dream, Ivory schedule. Be sure to follow their official SXSW page and on socials for updates.

And hey! Get out there and support these hardworking bands – go to the show, follow them online, buy their merch, buy their music, and tell all your friends.
