Meet the SXSW Band: Foamboy
SXSW is on the horizon for all of us, so we’re pushing forward with our coverage of acts, hoping we can introduce you to a few folks you might want to catch when you’re out and about. So today, we’ve got Portland’s Foamboy, who are working on getting an album out into the world before the end of the year!
What’s the name of the band/group? Where are you from?
Foamboy from Portland, OR
Describe your groups sound using only adjectives or superlatives.
Groovy, moody, vibe-y, synth-y, glittery
What was your most recent release? Any planned releases for 2023?
“Song About You” out Feb 20! We have more singles and an album for 2023 (hopefully!)
Why play SXSW? Whats the draw for the band? What about this festival will bring you to Austin?
SXSW is our first real music festival we’ve been invited to! It feels like a rite of passage. Some of my favorite bands (ALASKALASKA, Cheekface) are playing too and I can’t wait to see them.
There are tons of bands coming into town, but if you could create your own perfect festival, who would you have playing? Would it have a sick name? Where would it take place? Feel free to disregard the rules of time and space.
I need a festival with ALASKALASKA, Everything Everything, Kim Petras, Lianne La Havas, and Radiant Children. Basically all my favorite artists who aren’t from the US and almost never come to Portland.
What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?
We listen to a lot of freaky jazz in the car. August usually has an obscure funk band to show us, like Ole Brud.
Obviously you have seen or heard about the issues coming up this year about fair pay for artists at SXSW? Care to offer any insight or comment?
I agree with the fight for fair pay for artists. The current compensation is really awful. We are privileged to be able to come at all. The expense of coming keeps many incredible bands away from these opportunities. I don’t have anything smart to say, but I agree that we’re profoundly underpaid.
Weve been seeing more and more artists get into the food and beverage game, whether its pierogis from Pavement or Deftones beer. If you ever got into the game, what would be your food or beverage and what would it be called?
Foamboy would make artisanal vegan marshmallows which would be called Foamboys. (keeping it simple)
