SXSW Thursday In Photos
Despite some of the self-inflicted guilt of being part of the machine, we’re still out there trying to cover as much music and see as many bands as we could on Thursday. We were able to really bounce here and there, with the Valhalla and 13th Floor giving a prime location for the bloggers crossing the road. I think we all squeezed in some bands that we had wanted to see this year, so that’s an added bonus getting to cross a rad act off your list!
Band Highlights for Nathan:
Fcukers – While I mostly came to 13th Floor to catch some solid guitar bands, Fcukers got up on stage and just threw down a dance party in the middle of the day that was perfect for those in need of a midday pick-me-up.
The Spits – Been a hot minute since I caught the Spits. But even better, they went old school and rocked out a powerful set on the patio of 13th Floor to a crowd that just grew in size trying to see what it was all about!
Band Highlights for RayRay:
Fat Dog – Think Arabian nights soundtrack mixed with a more subdued version of Viagra Boys. Interesting way to start the day out at the Mohawk patio.
Living Hour – Having seen the band a few times over the years I wasn’t sure about sticking around at Swan Dive for their set, but I was happy I did. With delicate and personal song writing, paired with some explosive and emotive moments, the Canadians just killed it for me again.
Winona Fighter – I was really looking for something fun, upbeat and wild to close out my evening and these pop punk revivalists did not disappoint. They’ll be back opening up for Bayside at Stubbs in April so be sure to check them out.
Band Highlights for BGray:
Dry Cleaning – Fine. OK. I get it. They lived up to the hype. I’m even okay that the performance may not be that dynamic as the crowd seemed to provide the motion up front. I also appreciate their thoughtful statement on the current controversy with SXSW.
I’ll echo Fat Dog and Fcukers.
