Show Pics: Hey, Nothing @ 3Ten (3/28)
After a grueling run at SXSW 2025 a couple weeks prior, a pallet cleanser was due. Ryan and I headed out on a Friday evening to catch Hey, Nothing, a two human project out of Georgia making the dream of the 90s come alive. Along with them, we got the check out Sean Solomon‘s solo project. Sean is a member of Moaning and also a talented animator. It was a younger crowd, attending BECAUSE of social media, not in spite of, and I was happy to meet a new group of live music fans talking about traveling to see shows. Rad.
More on the show and PLENTY of pics to come. Click through, fam.
So yeah, the kids are gonna be alright.
Solo acts often rely on a macbook or some other MIDI wizardry to pull off the live setting. The most creative version of being solo on a large stage was at ACL; Willis Earl Beel brought a reel-to-reel on stage as a backing band for his set. Sean Solomon took that concept a couple decades forward with VHS tapes of animation or adaptations of home movies with the backing track complete with countdowns into the songs. Sometimes, these kinds of things are quite cringe. In this case, successfully clever use of multimedia in tandem with good songs, well done.
Hey, Nothing brought a fantastic drummer and multi-instrumentalist on tour with them to fill out their sound live. This isn’t a simple live set adapting the songs on a stoop, it is a big sound when needed. Tyler Mabry and Harlow Phillips use their traded vocals and harmonies to make a less folk version of the the folk-emo tracks they own in this live setting. Fans up front sang back the loud bits at full throat and then sat back in the soft moments to share in the feelings. After some encouragement to listen to Bob Dylan, and a questionable KoL cover, the absolutely delightful “Maine” was a true highlight. HBD, Marley.
