ACL 2019: Sunday In Pictures

The humidity returned. Record high temperatures were recorded. There was nowhere to hide. It was hot. I guess we have to move the fest back another month?

Day three was pretty chill for me. Plenty of fun shooting to do, though. Going into the fest, Sunday was all about Idles. Instead, I experienced several gems hiding around that powerhouse performance. From mellow to nostalgic to charming, Sunday’s photos include Otis The Destroyer, Thomas Csorba, Faye Webster, Idles, Banks, Third Eye Blind, Kacey Musgraves and a shot of the biggest crowd ever for side stage performance. No, I did not shoot Lizzo as after I checked out TEB and Kacey, the crowd waiting for Lizzo was so huge that making it through before the pit closed was not looking possible without a jet pack. It was crazy.

ACL 2019: Saturday In Pictures

Next. It was still hot. It was a dry heat, but who am I kidding. Electrolytes, it’s what plants crave.

As Billie Eilish fans sat in pools of sweat, I spent the day chasing the music. It was a good day. The dust started to rise and survival was the utmost priority,. Besides, we had Bayonne, Taylor Bennett, Superet, Men I Trust, Patrick Droney, Brittany Howard, Bones UK, Gary Clark Jr., James Blake and The Cure to keep us on task. No photos of GnR (sorry 19yo me), Metric (sorry RayRay or Eilish (sorry Nathan) due to artist restricted pits and rights grabs release (looking at you Emily). I made up for it with even moar Cure. ACL 2019: Friday In Pictures

Weekend One is done. Let’s start with Friday’s big gallery.

The big stories from Friday were GnR not embarrassing themselves (quite the contrary), Tame Impala crushing through a fantastic festival set, Thom Yorke’s fun side shining through, Jenny Lewis charming the crowd, FIDLAR bringing the noise and much more. The gallery to follow will feature The Amazons, Houses, FIDLAR, Cherry Glazerr, Palm Springsteen, King Princess, Weyes Blood, Jenny Lewis, Thom Yorke and Tame Impala.

ACL 2019 Festival Updates

Are you attending? Are you dreading the heat? It will be a dry heat. Like that helps…

While we aren’t as excited about the lineup this year versus last, my fest schedule is still full with either artists I want to see and shoot. That means staying hydrated while staying in motion and as you are making the stage to stage pilgrimages, there are some news bits that ACL sent out that you should pay attention to. Click through for the full skinny and a bag policy cheat sheet, but here a few highlights.

HI, HOW ARE YOU LOUNGE: Jumping on the Daniel Johnston thing for a good reason, there’ll be a lounge area to decompress and here about the Hi, How Are You Project.

BONUS TRACKS STAGE: I am going to call this the podcast stage. Lookup the schedule for interviews and discussion panels.

BEER HALL BITES: Two-for-One zone, now, get a beer and snack. Pretzels and beer cheese, carb up and protein intake, perfect.

MORE ENTRY LANES: Ramping up flow in, but y’all think hard about bringing a bag. Load up your pockets. Make one person that is reliable carry through the gear and buy them beers (and water).

Show Pics: Shivery Shakes @ Antone’s (9/18)

ATH Records had yet another record hit the streets with Shivery ShakesWeird Weather. Naturally, we should have a party. I was bummed to have been travelling when everyone was celebrating label mates Mean Jolene, so it was the key objective for my week to be out and about on a school night to listen to the dudes play the new record front to back. Antone’s was a lovely host. Click through for pics a plenty that includes friends Slomo Drags and Go Fever who were kind enough to also share jams and sell us more merch.

Have A Nice Weekend

I continue to be amazed by the highly ambitious Drift project Underworld set out on, to release a song with a visual every Thursday. Yes, some have been re-imagined works, but the excitement is in new material that is good most of the time, and phenomenal the rest of the time. Check out the latest release “Imagine A Box”.

Aside from that, it is a fun weekend for shows, especially Saturday with Missions doing a record release on one stage at Barracuda, locals covering Radiohaed songs on the other. Cheer Up has ATH faves like Annabelle Chairlegs and Go Fever, while next door Black Pumas will be on night two of three in a row at Mohawk. I’ll leave you with a favorite cut from Missions great album Subcreature. “Glimmer” drifts in and evolves to a fantastic exit.

Kae Astra Joins Mod Out

At a recent show, I was rather impressed with Kae Astra. The artist recently joined the Modern Outsider family with an EP on deck for later this fall. Here is the first single, “Medicate”. Perusing info from the press details, the new record has a strong team behind it with the mix by Danny Reisch who has worked with Wye Oak, The Octopus Project and White Denim and mastered by Dave Cooley who has worked with M83, Animal Collective and Washed Out.

Have a Nice Weekend

Hot Summer Nights is in full swing. Thanks to the Red River Cultural District for being rad. Gonna see Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Sunday. You? Should we talk movies? Maybe soundtracks?

TR/ST has shared a track off of Destroyer Pt. 2. Pre-order here. It is one of those amazing songs that can make you sink to internal depths and lift you up at the same time, that conflict of negative understones and ringing, climbing leads floating just above.

The New Division’s Fascination

Fascination is the first of two new EPs from The New Division. Title track video is embedded; this song is strong. The current release includes a bad ass instrumental track “Glass Jaw” and the smopoth synth-pop goodness of “Hope”, while “Faceless is an EP only track. Modus follows next month, with “Tonight” up to stream. I dig the multi-EP idea to get some tracks out there when ready, but a full LP is due at the end of the year, all on Kunkel’s Division87 label.
