Another Great Tune from Cheap Girls

cheapgirlsNot sure I realized quite how much I loved Cheap Girls until they announced their God’s Ex-Wife, a collection of rarities and B-Sides. Every song they’ve offered is really great, sounding like the softer underbelly in classic alternative rock. They’ve got distorted guitars with solos, catchy melodies and crashing cymbals; it’s not out of the ordinary, but the execution seems to make every song memorable. All I can say is these tracks sound like the perfect thing to turn up loud and drive around the neighborhood, smiling all the way. Asian Man Records is releasing the collection on September 16th.

Power Pop from Kleenex Girl Wonder

kleenexgirlwonderphoto3bygrahamsmithAre you tired of the emo revival? Tired of all those beats and blips? Well, then get ready to turn your speakers up and listen to classic power-pop from Kleenex Girl Wonder! Graham Smith and his project are ready to bring you a hook-laden record of the most literate piece of pop you’ll hear in 2016, filled with over 8,000 fresh lyrics and spanning over 70 minutes. The Comedy Album is a statement piece of art that surpasses its peers in this calendar year, and frankly, any of those in the past (I’m looking at you John Darnielle!). But, ultimately, a record’s only as good as the music, and if you don’t find your speakers begging to have the crisp guitar pop of this track coming through again and again, then you might need to take them to the shop. This brilliant collection comes your way on October 28th via Reesonable Records.

ATX Spotlight: Another Tune from the Gospel Truth

gospeltruthA few weeks back we got our first listen to “Artifact,” the debut single from The Gospel Truth‘s forthcoming Jealous Fires LP. Now we get the band’s title track from said record, and it’s another solid piece. It’s this jittery piece of rock n’ roll, kind of jagged in the construction that sets listeners in an off-kilter step as they await the emphatic crash of the chorus. Then just as suddenly as the chorus kicked in, your back trying to balance yourself and your ears with the ridiculous bass and drum work. Starting to get really excited for this release on September 16th via 12XU.

Brand New Music from Van William

vanwilliamAs a dude that blogs a lot, I constantly update my iPod (yes, I still use one!). Every time I go through the Ps I come to Port O’Brien; I press play, and remember that I love Van Pierszalowski. So, today, why not share the song from his new Van William project (this song features First Aid Kit). His voice hits home every time, matched perfectly by the female counterpoint; his voice owns a special place in my heart (and iPod!). I love the song’s production, filled with horns that swell in the track’s background. Here’s a listen to “Revolution,” which will get an official release on October 9th.

French Pop from Le SuperHomard

lesuperI can always count on Jigsaw Records to provide me with something delectable, and in this case that just happens to be French act Le SuperHomard. Our first listen to their new album Maple Key is a synth soaked bit of sunny pop, dusted lightly with a nice female vocal hook that floats about. There’s energetic pulse coming from the percussive section, so that adds a fortunate layer for listeners begging for a little sugar punch. This new full length will be released on September 22nd via the label…which you should browse for added pop fandom.

Stream Tim Chaplin’s Derelicting

timA while back Tim Chaplin floated into my life, and I was grateful. Even more so now that he’s released his new album, Derelicting. The great thing about your listen is that you’ll never grow weary of the same old same old, as each song takes a little bit of a turn. Some tracks offer bits of psychedelic sound experiment, while others wear touches of classic 60s pop…other tunes step up the glam. There’s a little bit of something for everyone, and in accomplishing that, Tim’s quietly crafted a record that can be played front to back…that’s an all too uncommon occurrence. Luckily, you can do just that below!

Hear a New Split Single Single

splitWhen this Split Single track ran early yesterday morning I was hoping it wouldn’t get passed over by too many folks…and it looks to have landed well. I mean, Jason Narducy has been around for a bit, but here he gets to make his own statement. I love the way this song never goes to quickly, or rushes to establish itself; the notes and the pacing all seem purposeful. While it definitely looks into good old fashioned alternative rock, it’s opening a chapter you can relish, with little sonic touches that create more space for the listener. The new album Metal Frames will be out on November 18th for you all to enjoy!

New Tune from Christian Fitness

christianfitnessChristian Fitness is back again with the third single from the Future of Left/McClusky side-project. There’s a driving force in the guitar/percussion work, but I think you’ll find the song taking on new attitude. Vocals for the verses are delivered in a spoken fashion, and the chorus hints at Bowie-esque pop appreciation. For a band and songwriter that’s known for hitting you hard, this song shows an interesting bit of accessibility; I think even a music passerby will find something to appreciate in this number. The promising new record will be out soon, so stay tuned to these pages!

Instrumental Doom Pop from Fresh Snow

freshsnowI’m one that’s attached to lyrics, so I don’t really go about looking for instrumental tunes. That being said, this new Fresh Snow tune somehow crept under my skin. It’s a brooding bit of gloom, built on multiple smaller movements; it’s not unlike what some might hear in the Stranger Things soundtrack that’s taken off of late…only a little heavier. It’s also one of those crazy tracks that you just want to see brought to the live setting, pulsing and throbbing, creating something altogether animal-istic. Their new album One comes out this Friday via Hand Drawn Dracula.

ATX Spotlight: Brand New Xetas!

XetasI’d love to go on a diatribe on how Austin music’s scene isn’t dying, but I think all you need to is just listen to the compilations put together this year: Austin Slack Capital, Flavor Sound Class of 2016…and now Dillo Milk 2. That last one will be released soon, and features this brand new Xetas track…which hasn’t been played live…and according to the band, isn’t slated for their next LP. It doesn’t matter, as it’s now out there, and it’s so fucking good. I mean, the chorus has this natural ferocity that can perhaps only best be compared to the band’s live set. And the continuous maneuvering, almost off-kilter swagger kind of makes the rest of rock n’ roll seem boring. Sorry folks…but with songs like this coming out left and right…rock n’ roll’s spirit is very much alive in Austin.
