New Camp Lo album

Bronx-natives and 20 year hip-hop veterans Camp Lo have continued their trend of putting out an album every four to five years with their newest release, Ragtime Hightimes. Camp Lo knocked their debut album Uptown Saturday Night out of the park in 1997, and while the quality of their music has remained the same, they have never achieved as much success. Anyone familiar with Camp Lo will remember them most for their hit single “Luchini/This Is It” which samples Dynasty’s “Adventurs In Music Land“. Some of their noteworthy singles since then include 2002’s “Glow” and 2008’s “Lumdi“. For Ragtime Hightimes, Camp Lo returned to working with frequent collaborator, famed hip-hop producer Ski. The video for one of Camp Lo’s singles off their newest album is below.

Jesse Payne Gives You Post Folk

jessepWhatever post folk is, I’m not one hundred percent sure, but Jesse Payne has been deemed thus. Citing origins in the Southeastern part of the U.S., his sound blends americana and folk elements as well as these subtle yet enticing vocals. I’m sharing this track with you today from Heirloom, Payne’s upcoming record which is set to be released on August 14th through Capture Music. “Origins,” opens with this infectious guitar riff that spirals out through the track and makes for a simmering folk track.

Another One From Heather Woods Broderick

heather+woods+broderickChances are that if I hear a new track from Heather Woods Broderick along the way to the July 10th release of her latest LP, Glider, I’ll be throwing it your way so you can get as excited as I am for this new album. The track we’ve got today, “Mama Shelter,” is one that features the vocal performance at the very core of the song. Instrumentally, it’s pretty minimalistic, but sharp waves of synth juxtapose with the twang of the vocals to make it sound like an electro-americana track. Take a listen and look out for Glider out on Western Vinyl soon.

Late to the Party: Jack + Eliza

15389_868043193280575_9085091377776735403_nSometimes we get busy and sometimes we miss some truly superb music as a result.  Jack + Eliza is one of my recent brain farts and today I hope to remedy such an atrocity.  The band is a  young duo hailing from NYC who craft a throwback style of pop music featuring a folk inspired, harmony laden sound.  This single “Oh No” should cause you to fall in love with the duo.  Enjoy.

Jack + Eliza will drop their debut album, Gentle Warnings, on August 7th via Yebo Music.

Shimmery Dream Pop From Savage Sister

savage sisterSavage Sister are a three part outfit from Chicago that make dream pop and shoegaze music. I stumbled upon this track, “Pale Surrender” and knew I had to share it with you all, as this is the perfect song to turn up loud on a Friday. Drenched in reverb, the whole tune seems to just barely waft in through your speakers; the high pitched synths dominate the track, but as it progresses you get some more of the percussion in the mix, as well as the incomprehensible vocals, which work as another instrumental element to the sound. Savage Sister have an album in the works called Speechless, but the date is TBA, so keep an ear out.

ATX Spotlight: Tiger Waves Are Back

tiger wavesWay back in 2012 Tiger Waves were on the cusp of releasing an album, but sometimes things go awry and plans fall through. The future seemed bleak for that album to ever find its way to your speakers and your hearts, that is until yesterday, when these locals posted this lost album in its entirety on their Bandcamp page for you to delight in the tracks that should have been. In this way, these masters of indie pop have announced that Tiger Waves are back, and we should be paying attention again. Are you? Take a listen to one of the lost songs below, called “Joyous Occasion,” which is a solid pop gem and crosses surf and electro pop with a Shins-esque spin, and lookout for new tracks from the band soon.

Joe Pernice Joins with Budo of Macklemore

rogersI spend the majority of my year teaching 13 year olds, so maybe this is the day (even though school’s out) when our musical tastes finally meet.  I’ve been a huge Joe Pernice fan for some time, though he’s had a few hits and misses here and there, but I was surprised he decided to work with Macklemore‘s Budo.  It just doesn’t fit, and yet it does.  The thing is, what matters most is the music, and the collaboration of Roger Lion definitely is successful.  Budo’s production creates the perfect soundscape for Pernice’s unique voice to come in to play.  Just imagine the old DJ Shadow working with one of your favorite singers.  The duo will release their Roger Lion album on September 18th without ever having met in person…or so the story goes.

Instrumental Jam from High Tides

tidyIt takes a lot to capture my attention if a track is instrumental.  I know a lot of instrumental tunes are used for artistic purposes within the structure of an album, but to present an album’s worth of such tracks takes a lot to grab my attention. That being said, this tune from High Tides has definitely piqued my interest. It’s a pretty smoothly constructed jam, flowing along like a boat in water (thus the track’s title?).  It’s the sort of song that fits perfectly near the end of your day; it soothes perfectly, calming when you need it most.  Look for their self-titled album on Rad Cult come July 31st.

Introducing: Moon Types

moonieAnother day, another great song coming to you from Jigsaw Records. This time the label has teamed up with new Swedish act Moon Types, and dammit if these aren’t some of the enjoyable indiepop songs I’ve come across in the last few weeks.  I like how there’s a Southern rambling in the execution of the guitar chords, accompanied by these great male/female vocal pieces that perfect the purity of pop songwriting. They’ll be releasing their Know the Reason 7″ later this summer, so keep your eyes peeled for your new favorite Swedish band.
