Fresh Song from The Sandwitches

sandyA lot of people have been talking about this song from the Sandwitches today, and they keep throwing out David Lynch’s name.  I guess I get that, but it seems a pretty basic bitch thing to say…it’s easy to throw out.  For me, I’m focusing on the exploration, sonically speaking, of the band since their inception.  There’s a lot of playful artistry when considering how the group deals with the empty space in this song, and presumably on their newest album, Our Toast.  I’m glad to see the group taking on this haunting sort of beauty, and I’ve got high expectations for when the album’s released on June 9th via Empty Cellar Records.

Soft Pysch From J Fernandez

11084092_637493659683995_6037841020121103511_oJ Fernandez is a Chicago based musician who is on the cusp of releasing his debut album of low-key psychedelic influenced rock. The song below is the first single from that upcoming album, Many Levels Of Laughter, which is out June 9th here in the U.S. “Read My Mind” makes me excited to hear that new album, as the laid-back tune packs a subtle kick that will linger in your head all day long. While it may not seem like it at first, this song has a lot going on within its 3:45 span, including retr0-synth that runs through the duration and of course, Fernandez’s oddly calming monotone vocals.

Playful Pop from Summer Fiction

summerThere’s a playful quality that comes with the simplicity of the new Summer Fiction tune.  It reeks of early Dent May, which isn’t a bad thing, mind you, as we raved about that release.  The focus is surely on the vocal delivery, with a light bit of piano and percussion backing things the entire way through. It bodes well for the Mancunian songwriter and his new effort, which will probably offer tracks just as playful as the one that follows below.  Look for Himalaya to be released on June 16th; should be something worthy of spending time with during the summer twilight hours.

Fashawn’s long-awaited sophomore effort

Fresno, CA rapper Fashawn’s 2009 independently released debut album, Boy Meets World, received almost universal critical acclaim with heavy focus on his age at the time–21–and the fact that someone so young could articulate the struggle so well. Many drew comparisons to hip-hop royalty Nas and the fact that Nas was 21 when he released his near perfect hip-hop classic Illmatic. Over the past six years Fashawn has released a handful of mixtapes, a couple collaborative albums, and an EP, but his latest release, The Ecology, shows that Fashawn’s debut was not just a flash in the pan. Nas himself has taken a liking to Fashawn as Nas both appears on the album and was instrumental in signing Fashawn to independent record label Mass Appeal Records. Highlights from The Ecology include “Guess Who’s Back”, “Letter F”, “Man of the House”, and “F.T.W.” but the entire album is worth checking out. Other guest appearances on the album include Dom Kennedy, Aloe Blacc, and BJ The Chicago Kid. The Ecology can be streamed or downloaded for free via DJBooth or it can be purchased from iTunes. The video for “Guess Who’s Back is below.

ATX Spotlight: Institute Full Length On Its Way

instLast year’s Salt EP really solidified Institute as a group to be aware of in the broad spectrum of the Internet rock n’ roll buzz-bands, but those in Austin likely had already been paying attention to the group (if not their other projects like Glue or Wiccans, etc). Now, they’ve got the release of their new full-length lined-up, and this first single really has me amped for its release.  You’ll hear a certain nonchalance in the delivery of the vocals, while there’s a sharpness in the gritty recording of the rest of the act. Sounds like the band’s going all over the place on Catharsis, and I hope you all have fun on the ride…going to be a good one. (Sacred Bones 6/9)

Jam the New Michael Rault Tune

mrThis new track from Michael Rault‘s pretty stellar, continuing the differentiation that Burger Records has been going through in the last year or so.  I guess you could call it lo-fi, but it’s more in the vein of Coma Cinema or Alex G, though there’s a sunnier side to his tunes.  It’s like taking the songwriting chops of the other two, tossing it in with a little California cologne, then spitting it out…it’s fucking dreamy. Living Daylight, his new album, will be out on May 5th via Burger, so if it’s your style, get your cash ready.

Another Solid Ancient River Track

ancientIf you’re going to make psychedelic rock, I feel like you should do it like Ancient River do.  They always sound like they’re playing in a smoke-filled room, barely audible among a hushed bunch of cult followers.  There’s no bombast or stomp to the sound; it’s just delivered in a steady manner that really allows for the listener to get lost in the emotional appeal of their music.  I’m expecting big things based on this new single, so we’ll see how it all unfolds when Keeper of the Dawn is unleashed on April 14th.

Minimalist Electro Pop From Night Beds

night beds

Nashville’s Winston Yellin has made the drastic switch from indie rock to electronically driven music under his project Night Beds, as the last single I shared with you a while ago showed us. “Tide Teeth,” takes us down this electro-pop road even further, and Yellin lets his vocals be the center stage of this song and the synth sounds waft in and out. While the track starts slow, it definitely builds to a more exciting finish.

Hear Another Track from Y33BA

glamAbout a month ago I brought you a new track from Y33BA, the secretive New York outfit also known as Your 33 Black Angels.  Today, I’ve got a new song from the group, and this one seems a lot more straightforward in its presentation. The song is just as propulsive as the early single, though there definitely sounds like there’s a Nada Surf presence on this tune, which would make sense seeing as both bands call NYC home.  On May 12th, you’ll finally get a chance to hear the band’s newest record, Glamour, which will probably sneak into a lot of your friend’s record collections. Hear why below!

New Kid Cudi music

Kid Cudi’s first official release since 2014’s Satellite Flight: The Journey to the Mother Moon is a song called “Love” from his forthcoming album, which he recently announced will be called Speedin’ Bullet to Heaven. Whether this will be a continuation of his Man on the Moon series has not yet been made clear. In the mean time, enjoy “Love”.
