New Single from Eyelid Kid

eyelidThose of you that are fans of Vampire Weekend are really going to enjoy this new single from Eyelid Kid.  The group employs the same sort of pop aesthetic using a nice percussive element to really move the song forward.  But, it’s also in a direct contrast to the way that the vocals are delivered, flowing smoothly from the get-go, and occasionally accented by saxophone squawks.  It’s like easy listening for people that have good tastes, or at least that’s what I like to pretend.  Regardless, it’s a song you’ll definitely enjoy listening to on repeat several times today.

Show Preview: Love Inks @ Mohawk (4.28) – FREE

showoffWhat’s better than a free show at one of Austin’s best venues? A free show with three incredible electronic bands, and that’s precisely what you’ll get if you head out to Mohawk tonight.  First up you’ll get Silk Rodeo; they offer a dark bit of electronica with an ability to build their sound to swelling heights of pop delight.  Then, there’s Whiite Walls; this is perhaps one of Austin’s biggest rising electronic based stars, though they play with a full-on band, making their sets remarkable.  Closing the night will be Love Inks, who affirmed their place in the local music scene with last year’s Generation Club.  I hear they’re working on brand new tunes, so you might get a set full of new tracks for your ears.  In the end, it’s a great local bill, and one you’ll be sore about if you don’t take advantage of this FREE SHOW.

Get Heavy with Zig Zags

zigI felt like I hadn’t really offered up anything brash and rocking in a bit, so when this new track came out last Friday, I knew I’d have to fit in for you.  This is the first single off the new release from Zig Zags; their debut effort already has the seal of approval from Ty Segall, who handled production duties.  The guitars offer a heavy rock lineage, while the vocals reach into that punk meets metal realm.  And, just look at the rad artwork that’s associated with this single; I can’t wait to see what’s on the cover of their self-titled debut.  That record will be released on June 3rd by In the Red Records, but you can jam this one all day long.

Show Review: Future Islands @ Mohawk (4.23)

Upload Future Islands 20140423222153In a week filled with shows, it was perhaps one of the more anticipated sets of the week, especially with Future Islands seemingly springing to larger popularity via their performance on some late night talk show.  I was a little bummed that people didn’t quite make it out early enough to catch the openers, Knifight, but perhaps that will help keep them our little secret for just a bit longer.

Thanks to Bryan at PPI for sharing some photos with us.

Nice Bit of Pop from Easy

easyYou’ve got to start off Monday’s rather gently, especially after all the music fans in Austin endured an incredible week of shows.  So , in lieu of that concept, I bring you this tune from Easy, a rad little act from LA.  They craft this careful pop music that rises and falls, often with orchestral touches and changes in rhythm throughout the track.   Personally, I dig how they speed things down, then revert back to a gentler pace; it’s a good little effect, and one that allows for the band’s songwriting to be put in full display. Expect to hear more from these guys going forwards.

Recalibrate Your Brain

artworks-000073405557-9sdcma-t500x500A little PYAITK for Friday…

You know it has been a long week; so many shows, liver abuse, too many whiskies, perhaps a marathon, a bathroom remodel or just the boss that won’t chill. No matter the source of your stress, I present this song to level your mood.

Ever heard of Brian Reitzell? Sure, you have. You have seen movies with his original music or well-curated soundtracks. Did you see Lost In Translation? So yeah, street cred, but his latest project is an LP called Auto Music. “Last Summer” is a sample from the album due in early June on Smalltown Supersound and a means to soothe, relax and then rebuild your brain in eight and a half minutes with a little help from MBV’s Kevin Shields.

Psych Rock from Verma

TIM071_VERMA_SUNRUNNER_JACKETAs we draw closer to Austin Psych Fest, the genre’s been on my daily rotation.  I’ve been listening to all sorts of artists, but mostly the older acts I’ve not visited in awhile.  That being said, today I have reason to enjoy a new psychedelic tune from Verma, who’ve just signed on with Trouble In Mind Records.  The opening of this song really rides walls of feedback and noise until the bass line jumps in to steady the ship.  Throughout the tune vocals will pop up sporadically, but the feeling of this number is more about sonic exploration; it’s okay to jam out when it sounds this good. Their album, Sunrunner, will be out on May 27th.

Fresh Music from PAWS

pawsThanks to our friend Mike, we’re always on the tip of what’s happening in Glasgow, and the lads in PAWS have been on our radar since the release of their last effort, Cokefloat.  The band’s got this song that draws influences from various guitar-rock bands, though this song is more of a slow-burner, unfolding at a steady pace, rather than rushing through with feuding guitars…as many are ought to do. Fat Cat Records will be releasing the group’s new record, Youth Culture Forever; it’s slated for a May 6th release (they’ll be playing Austin on the 15th of May).
