Quiet Track from White Woods

White Woods Big Talking Corner Town 7"I first discovered the work of White Woods when The Coathangers announced that their singer Julia would be doing a little side project.  I loved the first 7″ that came out, and this new one is even more beautiful, demonstrating how far she can step away from her garage rock mainstay.  It’s such a peaceful track, with Julia’s voice carefully laid atop the quiet instrumentation.  If you’re familiar with her main project, you’ll be amazed at such a stark contrast.  The new 7″ is up for pre-order now from Suicide Squeeze Records.

Sonny Smith Keeps Trucking with New Sonny & the Sunsets Tune

1838I don’t think anyone in the world works as hard as Sonny Smith, except for maybe Ty Segall.  It seems like Sonny always has something in the works, be it his solo work or his band Sonny & the Sunsets.  He just released a new single that will be featured on his upcoming effort with his band; the record is called Antenna to the Afterworld and will be released by Polyvinyl Records on June 11th.  Interestingly, this song has less of a folk feel, changing it for that current Cali guitar sound that you find in many of the modern acts from the state (many of whom Sonny has worked with).  I’m interested to see how the whole record comes together, especially if he’s mixing things up.

SxSW 2013 Pics: Iggy and The Stooges @ The Mohawk

My SxSW overload begins with a show that happened at my favorite venue, The Mohawk. It was a limited entry kind of deal, badge and wristband only, no wristbands even got in – Iggy Pop and the Stooges with Japandroids.

I had requested access to the NPR showcase featuring Nick Cave and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. To think, SxSW has become the kind of event where seeing Iggy in a thousand person venue is a backup plan? Odd.

Indie Pop Bobbing with The Occasional Flickers

31230_121908194514116_3251031_nThere’s gotta be something in the water in Scotland that encourages the development of indie pop bands.  I can name a handful of bands that are on my all time favorites list, and a growing list of acts that keep pushing exporting great pop records.  My latest discovery is The Occasional Flickers who will soon be releasing their new single on Cloudberry Records.  There’s definitely an homage to early B&S here, with that driving guitar line that fits perfectly with the vocal melody; you’ll find yourself hooked to this track in absolutely no time at all.  Cheers to you Scotland, and your wonderful indie pop exports!

New Music from The Sweets

1159209151-1The way the world works today, musically speaking, you’ve got to stay on top of things.  Labels and bands are capable of releasing all sorts of material in various formats, making it hard to keep up.  So you’ve got to check in on your favorites, as I was doing with Bleeding Gold Records.  They’ve just offered up a free download of this new EP by The Sweets, which is filled with calm harmonies recorded with an atmospheric DIY sensibility.  Okay, so I hate to use the world “chill,” but it’s really fitting for this track, which is the opener on the groups Montequilla EP.  Go grab it HERE, and check out some other BG releases while you’re at it.

Blissful Pop Tune from Legs

legs-e1361513246175We were happy to help our friends over at Loglady Records toss a rad party at Trailer Space during SXSW, so in exchange, they gave us this gem of a record from Legs.  I’ve got news for you folks, this is going to be your Spring party album.  Listening to their first single, it’s got an interesting angle…at first it just seems like a gentle ballad, but the ringing guitar and pounding rhythm section propel it from average jam to certifiable hit.  Today is one of those days where things just fit in perfectly.  You can expect big things from the band when Pass the Ringo comes out from Loglady on April 23rd.

Show Review: Vampire Weekend @ Austin City Limits (3/17)

As SXSW 2013 came to end on Sunday, dotted by emerald wardrobes and the overwhelming scent of corned-beef and Guinness, NYC’s Vampire Weekend rounded out their trio of shows for the week atop the Moody Theater stage. Serving as the opening act for the 39th Season of Austin City Limits and for many festival goers, the pièce de résistance, the quartet served up a short, yet tight set leaving many wishing for more. New Music from TEEN

homepage_large.01eb35c2This song surfaced last week, but I was actually out catching the band at hand.  They played a tight little set swirling with noise and wonderful melodies.  Now that I’m back in the world, I feel like Teen‘s new song needs some attention, as it was one of the hits they played during their set.  Interestingly, I felt like it was a bit noisier live, but I like the group holding back here, allowing for the powerful songwriting to make it’s way through.  The group has their new Carolina EP coming out your way on May 28th via Carpark Records. This is someone you should give some attention to in the upcoming weeks.

Straight Rocker from Radical Dads

raddads-za800crop2.145244.120753I’ve always liked Radical Dads.  They’re not necessarily trying to reinvent the wheel musically, they’re just focusing on delivering solid rock tunes, much as they did with their first effort Mega Rama.  Now that they’re back, let’s focus on the fact that the group is growing increasingly consistent at providing chugging guitar lines and hooks galore in the vocals.  Not only does this make the band enjoyable, but it illustrates that we’ll all have our hands full when their newest record, Rapid Reality, is released in May by Uninhabitable Mansions.  Sometimes simplicity is the best formula for success.
