Premiere: Lola Tried Unleash Single + EP News

I’ve watched Lauren Burton bust her ass about town for the last few years, and her hard work is really paying off with her new project, Lola Tried. The four piece have crafted a wonderful debut EP, and we’ve got your first listen right here. This track has Lauren opening, looking back on the past, and while the lyrics pull from the hardened times of growing up, there’s an emphatic confidence to her voice. She’s got great control as the band fills in the space behind her, rolling drums and chords that add an appropriate amount of edge to the tune. It’s a sign of a band that offers the rougher side of pop music, filled with sincerity and hooks; you’ll be able to get your hands on the Popsicle Queen EP at the band’s release show at Cheer Up Charlies on February 16th…or buy directly from the band.

This Middle Children Track is a Jam

While this track may have already gotten tons of Internet love yesterday, it’s just too good for me to pass up. Middle Children are an Indiana outfit, apparently intent on just bringing in huge hooks of the guitar sort. The driving energy of this particular track is immediately apparent, with a slight hint of attitude coming through the vocals. It all adds towards a power-pop fans delight, rolling lyrics to match the emphatic drum beats. Wasn’t sure where power-pop had gone this year, but it looks like it’s alive and well here. Look for the group’s Earth Angel on March 3rd from Lets Pretend Records.

ATX Spotlight: New Music from Julia Lucille

While Julia Lucille may not be an Austin native, her arrival and presence in our city and state has surely inspired her latest musical outing. This sprawling number wears the soul of nights spent cruising down empty highway rods, aided by slide guitar from RF Shannon‘s Luke Dawson. While it opens with the voice and very very light strumming, the song soon takes off to other-worldly heights, soaking it in extra bits of reverb and textural touches that create the song’s depth. Imagine yourself dancing in the arms of your love in some small town tavern, while an unknown chanteuse serenades you; it’s the best bit of music escapism. Look for Julia’s new record, Chthonic, via Keeled Scales on April 7th.

Airy Pop from The Arctic Flow

Just when I thought I’d run a bunch of the same old same old you’ve already read about, I found this delightful tune from the Arctic Flow. They’ve got a brand new 7″ from Kingfisher Bluez, and it’s the subdued pop that I find enchanting. There’s a slight sparkle in the guitar progression, akin to many an indiepop gem, tied in with a warm vocal that calms your soul. I love how the tracks on this release are gentle and soothing; the pace of the songs here really allow for musical escapism. But, the release is super limited, so grab em’ while you can!

Show Pics: Pollen RX Release Party

Hi. Photo tech, here.

Sunbelt Emptiness is a triumph. How is that for a quotable?

Having torn up a couple of pizzas at King Bee (you must go, Billy and Collette rule), +1 and I made our way to see all the friends over at Cheer Up for the Pollen RX release party. High on my list was checking out The Infinites plus a little quality time with Kay Odyssey. I hit the wall a little after Pollen RX’s nearly perfect set; we could have used a little more vocal in the mix from Maud. #Gremlins I should have stuck around for Deep Time and Popper Burns from field reports.

The Bankees Are Back

I’m not sure if this is just a world of circumstance coming together or if the Bankees will reunite in full, but I’m glad the band is back with their new mini-album, The Family Man…even if only for a minute. While on hiatus, the members of the band had families, fell in love and moved forward in their life after toiling in the music world for some time; these songs all reflect those moments, building their new lives into new songs. Musically, the songs are light and hopeful, employing the band’s knack for using harmony and touching on the various indie elements we all love. Enjoy their new album…and hope that even if their appearances are brief, that they’re always coming back to give us more.

Catch This New Moon Duo Video

Masters of fuzzy psych rock, Moon Duo, are going to be releasing a new album shortly, and to get you stoked for that new record, you ought to take a listen and watch the pretty stellar animated music video below. As per usual, Moon Duo strike the perfect balance of hazy-lost-in-a-dream psych and gritty alt rock. On “Cold Fear,” you get quite a bit of keyboard as well to guide you through the heavy distortion. The vocals are a gentle aspect amidst the instrumentation, hypnotizing you furtherinto the vortex of swirling guitars. Take a listen/watch below and then go preorderOccult Architecture Vol. 1 from Sacred Bones.

Trippy Pop from Dream Joint

In my search for something a little different, I stumbled upon this new jam from Dream Joints, who will be releasing a 7″ with Bleeding Gold Records in the very near future. This track is the B-Side to that, filled with sampled percussion and an interesting wash of distortion fluttering in the background. The vocals are sunk deep into the heart of the song, with some added electronic textures thrown in to craft a deeper emotional appeal. Give it a listen and stay tuned for more from this project in the next few months!

More Music from Molly Burch

Molly Burch is going to be the lady of the year, just in case you weren’t in the know already. She’s teased us already with a 7″, but the release of Please Be Mine is getting closer, with all of us in Austin already waiting for you to hear what she brings to the table. Her soulful voice has already been hailed across the Internet, but I like the slight little pitch and tone changes on the end of syllables; it makes her heartfelt nature a little more playful, not to mention just a step outside your regular fare. If hits are what you’re looking for, expect Molly to bring them all your way on February 17th when the album hits stores via Captured Tracks.

Stream New EP From Vansire

Minnesota based dream pop group Vansire is really becoming a mainstay here on ATH. We’ve been enjoying the few songs the guys have shared with us and dig their unique take on the dream pop genre. Today the gents have been kind enough to share with us a full stream of their brand new EP entitled The Rolling, Driftless North. I’m not sure how this band isn’t being talked about on all the major sites, but they certainly deserve to be a household name with tunes like these. Enjoy.
