Indiepop from Maybe Don’t

Coming this March, a gem of indiepop from UK act Maybe Don’t will hit, so why not preview a little bit of it here with us today. It takes the melodic sense of most pop and fuses it with guitar pop, building up to a exuberant explosion of gang vocals and hooks in the chorus. I feel like they’ve perfectly captured the feeling of carefree indifference to the world, especially when they turn things up and jam out in the song’s latter half. You’ll get this song a few more on the band’s new 7″ coming via Oddbox Records.

Premiere: Ty Richards Readies Zillion

In covering music in Austin, we’re bound to miss someone falling through the cracks, and unfortunately it’s been Ty Richards…until now. We’re really excited to share the first single from his forthcoming album, Zillion. Ty writes, records and mixes his record all on his own terms, often writing the songs before going back to fill in the lyrical content, as he did on this new number, where he ended up writing an anthem for the nice guys out there. Musically, there’s a groove within the song that might pay lineage to the finer moments of Spoon’s pop sensibility, providing a bubbling bounce…although it’s spun in a broader encapsulation of pop, capturing elements of psychedelia as well. Look for his new LP everywhere on February 3rd!

Spot On Quirky Folk From Bonny Doon

Before today, I wasn’t too familiar with the likes of Detroit’s Bonny Doon, but now it’s safe to say that they’re on my radar for sure. The group is a four piece that began out of the ashes of several other punk bands, the members of Bonny Doon reportedly discovering their sound by playing as quietly as possible. The result is brilliant folksy indie rock, which you can hear for yourself on “I See You,” below. The song is a like an intricate tapestry of great one-liners that add up to a beautiful story. With soft spoken vocals and gentle guitars, it’s a melancholy track that’ll linger in your head for a while. Take a listen and look out for the band’s self-titled debut, which will be out March 10th on Salinas Records.

Quiet Folk from Roman Lakes

The last time I wrote up something about Roman Lakes I was marveling at the intimacy of the recording. This time around, well, you’re going to get a bit more polish on the lead song, but it still holds you closely, wrapping you up in the warmth from the first instant. However, things do change a touch with the addition of drummer Mario Lunardo…give this song a few moments before he joins in to really make the track something quite special. Bleeding Gold Records is offering it up for the “name your price” mark, but remember to please donate to always keep great small labels running.

Loving This Neutral Shirt Tune

neutralshirtIn the New Year, I’m just going to keep jamming to shit I like. Today, and probably for the next few days, comes this hit from Neutral Shirt…with the fresh announcement of their 2016 EP via Lost Sound Tapes. I like the lyrical delivery of singer Matt Terrones…oddly reminiscent of John Samson. But, while I love that aspect, I think the song is ultimately successful because of the longing female accompaniment during the chorus. Those of you looking to shine some light into your lives will gladly press play on this track…and then over and over again. Look to pick up the EP when it’s released this Friday.

Have You Heard Smokescreens?

smokescreensAdmittedly, I’ve got a bit of a man crush on Corey Cunningham (musically speaking); I’ll swear by anything he does…Terry Malts, Business of Dreams…and now Smokescreens. Even better, is he’s teamed up on this project with Chris Rosi of Plateaus (they’ve been quiet lately, amiright?). The end result is something you’d expect if you knew the history of these bands: huge pop with sound with enough grit for you to still act like you’re tough. While the bouncy verses are great, I’m stuck on trying to hit the same perfect notes that come in the glorious chorus. Their new tape hitson February 2nd via Parked in Hell.

Dance Along To This New Jens Lekman

Everyone loves Jens Lekman, that’s sort of just a known fact around the indie rock world. So I’m glad to be able to post about some new tunes from the artist in the form of this track, “What’s That Perfume That You Wear,” which is a great track to set your day in motion and get your dancing shoes on early. The song begins slowly, letting Lekman’s unmistakable vocals guide you along, building up to the introduction of the dance-rhythm, including steel drums. Take a listen and get stoked for Lekman’s upcoming release,Life Will See You Now, which is out February 17th via Secretly Canadian.

Dreamy Pop from Blushing

blushingAustin’s Free Week is all about discovery, and I didn’t even have to leave the house to discover this great new dream pop band, Blushing. The group are about to release their Tether EP on January 13th, and I dig what I hear in these songs. You’ll hear the guitars shimmering in the best way, but perhaps what I love the most is how the songs have some length, which allows you to fully digest the sound from the band…no two minute tracks here! The longest track on the EP is titled “Mess,” and I’m putting it below to illustrate the power the aesthetic beauty they’ve captured on their EP. Go ahead, give it a listen.

Propulsive Rocker from Deleter

deleterFrom the moment this new Deleter tune takes off, the drums push you forward, rolling in step with the ringing of angular chords. As the song begins to pick up pace, it also becomes apparent that while there are post-punk leanings, there’s also a semblance of pop sensibility, leaving the track in the region of a more angst-y power pop. This song appears on the band’s forthcoming Meaningless Chants EP, which is said to have a larger political bend; it’ll be released on January 21st via Land Ski Records on a limited cassette (as well as digitally).

Nice New Track From Quiet the Pilot

10484414_10203204845494321_9017188723809787699_nI’ve been away too long, but am ready to start sharing some tunes again in whatever capacity I can. I’ll kick things off today with this memorable new tune from L.A. based songwriter Ryan Moore and his project known as Quiet the Pilot. The track is called “Stick Around Some” and reminds of Built to Spill or Modest Mouse if they were stripped down to only an acoustic. Check out his other music on soundcloud and you might even be reminded of Iron & Wine or other famous singer songwriters. I’ve played this one 5 times already today. When I have more information on this project, I’ll send it your way.
