Premiere: Minor Moon Release Album

minormoonAmidst all the hubbub of Halloween week, you’re likely to need a little chill, which is why you want to unwinda little with this delightful track from Minor Moon tune. The core of the song gives the impression of forlorn Americana, but the special touch revolves around the warm hook of the chorus; it offers up a slightly different spin, enabling listeners to digest the careful craftsmanship. As the band looks to fill in more space, they layer the sound with ornate horns; I also like the little keyboard nod to Air, or at least that’s what my ears hear. Celebrate the release of the band’s new single this Friday, and look for What Our Enemies Know, their new album, on Jaunary 20th via Ruination Records.

ATX Spotlight: Fresh Music from Drakulas

drakulasPop punk definitely has a home in Austin, but it seems we’ve inherited a great bit of that from our friends up in the DFW/Denton area, especially if you give a listen to this brand new Drakulas track. The band is brandishing a blend of gritty pop punk akin to Texas vets Marked Men or Radioactivity…and this is not entirely a bad thing, as I’m clearly a fan of that sound. Their album, Raw Wave, hits stores on November 18th, and it’s shaping up to be something quite special. In what seems like a banner year for Austin music, it looks like we have another hit on our hands; look for the release from Dirtnap Records.

Brand New Mega Bog Track

megabogGone Banana was this great little effort that introduced many of us to Mega Bog, the project of Erin Birgy, and now that she’s solidified herself as an incredible talent, her new single is winning rave reviews. It’s no surprise, as the songwriting has always been there, but she’s crafted this elegance with her voice, still touching up space with bits of carefully bent strings and studio production. You’ll find it hard to pull yourself away from this tune, much as a bog would hold you still in its deep muck…though here your ears will ring with joy. Happy Together, her new effort, will be released on February 3rd via Nicey Music.

Banger From MOON

moon-photo-1I’m fairly certain that this single called “We’re So Close” from Los Angeles based MOON came out quite a long time ago, but it’s never been posted on ATH and it needs to be recorded that we approve. From the first time hitting play, you’ll realize you are in for a banger of a track. It hits pretty hard when transitioning from the softer verses into the rocking chorus complete with power chording guitars and rising vocals. Coming soon to a festival in your town!

Fresh Tune from Moon Duo

moonduoOf all the psychedelic bands that have flourished in the last few years, I think Moon Duo has to be one of my favorites. They always seem to take some of the basics of the genre, then take them on their own little musical adventures. Their latest single has a darkened electronic tinge to it, pulsing from the get-go. Vocals are muddied, lurking beneath…that is until the band hits the chorus and turns things into a dancing world of pop sensibility. I imagine this is the region where Blank Dogs meets those psych freaks. Excited to hear the group’s new effort, Occult Architecture Vol. 1 via Sacred Bones Records early next year.

Noisy Fun from Eat Fast

eatfastI always thought that Wavves had a pretty simple formula, but in that, it was also extremely fun, which is why they were so endearing. So, Eat Fast takes that formula, adds a little bit more noise, strips away some of the immediate hooks and forces you to invest a bit more in their latest tune. For you, that makes it a win, as you’ll hear similarities from one of your favorites, but you’ll get it louder and heavier, guaranteeing that this isn’t just some rehash effort. This stand alone single should leave you thirsting for more.

Premiere: Instrumental Slow Burner from Half

unnamedI’m always out there just waiting to find something that carries me away, and most of the time that involves a hook or a lyrical line. But, occasionally, like the case with Half, an instrumental tune subtly lets my mind escape. This brand new track from the England producer seemingly just floatsout, drifting through your speakers; there’s an undercurrent that seems to emulate the trickling of water, bubbling beneath the cascade of electronic ambiance. It makes you want to sit down and write a movie or a book, and for me, that’s a great compliment…its escapism. Look for his new Soft Play EP headed your way soon via Border Series.

Melancholy Number from Floating Room

floatingromIt would be easy to look at “sad god” and immediately acknowledge that Floating Room will be bringinga gloomy offering. But, the craftsmanship of the tune is what ultimately makes this number for captivating, carefully brooding and building. While the song opens carefully, almost like a bedroom folk number, the space behind is filled by a walls of guitar that slowly creep into the folds and cracks; a wall of distortion fills your ears, as does some elevated drum work that wasn’t present early on in the tune. This song will feature on the band’s new album, Sunless, which is released by Good Cheer Records on November 11th.

Crunchy Rocker from QTY

qtyQTY are an upstart act from New York bringing a lot of promise with their debut track. It’s a hook-laden bit of rock n’ roll that seems steeped in the recent history of the band’s hometown…though I also hear a bit of the Replacements. Dan Lardner takes the reigns with the vocals, but you can hear the balance being brought by Alex Niemetz just beneath that, leaving the song with just enough contrast to make the whole thing interesting. The group have just signed on to Dirty Hit to release their debut, so be on the look out for more from NYC’s rising stars.

Premiere: New Music from Erki Parnoja

Lately, my musical tastes have been looking for a journey, and this brand new track from Estonia’s Erki Parnoja is perfect. The song features this grooving bit of instrumental guitar maneuvering, with just a faint hint at vocals living occasionally underneath. But, for me, the special part of the tune lives in the middle where the guitars are paused and an ambient bit of atmospherics works its way through your speakers. It has the perfect cinematic world built in, which goes great with the accompanying video that Erki has put together illustrating how he came about creating the album art for his follow-up to the Himmelbjerget EP. Listen and love my friends.
