Cure TributeIt was a busy weekend. There was a race going on out at COTA, there was house prep for the long run into downtown known as SxSW, a friend’s birthday and this little show that friends put together where several of my favorite local bands were covering Cure songs to benefit The Teenage Cancer Trust. Among participants, we get Bali Yaaah, Modern Medicine, Knifight with half of Night Drive, Moving Panoramas and many more…

Light Folk from Amaroun

amarounWhen names like Eels and Sharon Van Etten get thrown into a presser, I’m going to pay attention. Amaroun does definitely have some similarities, particularly in the slight gruff quality that spreads from her voice, but the music here seems far more intimate. There’s power in this song from the get-go, but it spreads and blossoms once the backing accompaniment fills in some of the sparse moments, swelling with these intoxicating moments that make it hard to pull yourself away. This single is her debut, so look for more from her in the future.

Delightful Indiepop from Marlovers

marloversI’ve been waiting for some news on the Jigsaw-Records front, one of my favorite labels. They just tossed up a few songs this weekend, one being this great tune from Spain’s Marlovers. Fronting the band, and particularly the vocals, is Palma de Mallorca, who has this stunning power that’s hard to pull yourself away from; it’s like a magical pop tractor-beam. The label will be releasing the band’s second album, Waves, which is destined to win over indiepop lovers across the globe. This is one of those songs that makes it feel good to be alive, so live it up.

Bright Pop from Boyfriends

boyfriendsBare with this track; I know the opening 30 seconds are a bit strange, but this new Boyfriends tune is definitely a fun bit of pop music to kick off the week. There’s angular guitar stabs accented by synth stabs. Vocals are delivered in an off-kilter manner, leaving listeners with distinct memories; hold on for the chorus too, and the voice gets some warm harmonizing by the best of the band. Pop music, and this brand of pop in particular, is meant to be fun, so sit back and enjoy yourself. Why so serious?

Hovvdy Making Huge Waves

hovvdyAustin bands are a dime a dozen, but you’ve got to have something special to break beyond the confines of the city. It appears that Hovvdy have accomplished done that, blasting thing single all over the world rather quickly (15K listens in a matter of days!). You’ve got to be proud, as an Austinite, but you’ve also got to take note if you’re living beyond. The act is working with Merdurhaus and Sports Day Records, both reputable voices in the void, to release their debut, Taster on April 15th. Take a listen to what it’s all about, as these guys won’t be looking back.

New Music from Hollow FortyFives

10854948_481098848714403_3012434106806134452_oThe dudes from Hollow FortyFives have graced our pages before, but now that they’ve got a new track in the mix, we should go ahead and give that a push. This track pushes on the band’s garage rock tendencies, but continues to push melodies into the mix. I really appreciate the fact that there’s such clarity in the vocals, which isn’t always the case. I look forward to seeing what these guys come up with, as a new song generally means there’s a new release right around the corner. Happy Monday folks.

Another Brand New Elephant Stone

elephantsBased upon the singles we’ve already heard, Elephant Stone are happily branching into a new direction, musically. This new tune sounds an awful like a more controlled Flaming Lips; it’s creative and artful, yet still has a great deal of pop sensibility, gearing it up to be adored by scores of listeners. It’s just another indicator, to me at least, that their new effort, Ship of Fools, is going to be a delight in so many ways. Plus, the band’s on tournext week as they make their way to Austin for SXSW; they’re always a local favorite here.

We F*cked Up Friday!

Sometimes there are so many things that we are either exposed to early and forget about, or are a little late to the party in getting to share with you. With that in mind, going into the weekend, I wanted to start a new feature post series called We F*cked Up Friday! in which we give you a few tracks/videos that we may have missed in posting throughout the week, but that are mandatory listening before you head into the next week. We’re gonna keep it snappy and just give you the song and vital details, since we’re already running late. Enjoy.
