Tourist Dollars is my Tuesday Jam

touristdollarsWhen this track first played upon my speakers, I thought that the vocals resembled the longing in the voice of Tim Cohen (Fresh & Onlys/Magic Trick). And, that’s all well and good, as Tim’s one of my favorites, but the music of Tourist Dollars is far different, playing upon the cleaner realm of shoegaze and shimmering indiepop. There’s that circular progression in the guitars, leaving plenty of space for the vocals to soar brightly in the front of the track. For now, this is just a one off single the band have released while they work on their forthcoming debut, slated for a 2016 release.

Meet Boys Forever, Will Ya

boysNot going to claim any skills in finding this track, as it was pointed out to me by our friends over at Slumberland Records; Boys Forever is a new project from Patrick of Veronica Falls. One of the songs just went up yesterday, and embarks on the pristine side of pop that one would expect a member of VF to be a part of…and one can also imagine more quality as this is merely a home demo. But, don’t just sleep on the newest track, as the previously released tune is just as tasty, though a slightly approach. You’ll best be served if you don’t sleep on this project. I put both songs below…convenience and such.

Another Great Wildhoney Tune

10636662_868611053203947_3628233110282321580_oI’m still playing a little catch up, going through my favorite sites and labels for new tunes…so I blame that for missing this Wildhoney jam during the weekend festival. We’ve clearly hyped the band up plenty before, but I think this track might be the one that lets people see that it’s not just us. You get to hear their complete sound shining here, knife-like guitars cascading in and out behind a melodious vocal performance. You’ve got two weeks to familiarize yourself with the band before their new Your Face Sideways EP is released via Topshelf Records.

Quiet Track from The Innocence Mission

karenperisThere was a time when all I listened to was melancholy indie rock, and honestly, I’m not really sure where that spot in life came (eternal sadness perhaps). But, one of the bands that consistently came into rotation was The Innocence Mission. They had this magnificent approach to crafting solitude while still carrying a strong melody that always found its way into my head. I’ll always have a place in my heart reserved for the voice of Karen Peris. The group has a new album, Hello I Feel the Same coming out on October 17th, so if this is your bag, get at it kids.

Are You on the Boogarins Train Yet?

boogarinsWhen we first heard about Boogarins, I’ll admit I casually lumped them into the rehash psych pile, only to circle back after catching the band live. I have to claim insanity, or perhaps naivety, as the group’s quickly become one of my favorite groups of the genre. Still, the band’s only sold themselves more as they’ve progressed; you should just listen to the musicianship in the songwriting that exists in their latest single. It’s the second single from Manual, the band’s newest effort, which have sold me…especially with the album’s intriguing artwork; look for it to be released on October 30th via Other Music.

Hear Another New Single from Wimps

wimpsListening to this new single from Wimps, I’m pretty convinced they need a larger stage in the indie realm. Their latest single, “Suitcase,” is a splendid piece of propulsive punk rock, fueled by incredible guitar work and a bit of ramshackle percussion. It’s reminiscent of the work by Parquet Courts, though I think this one has a ton more attitude and punch than their contemporaries. Could this be the year when Wimps break into the ears of the masses? I sure hope so. Look for their new album, Suitcase, to hit on November 13th via Kill Rock Stars.

New Music from Try the Pie

ttpI was looking for something gentle and innocent today, so it’s a good thing that we got this new track from Try the Pie in over the weekend. It’s the writing project of Bean Tupou, and it’s got this great recording quality despite sounding like these song’s are all coming straight from Bean’s bedroom. Musically, it’s quite intimate, as this song displays, allowing listeners to experience Tupou’s life for themsleves; she wants nothing more than for you to be a part of your world. Her new album is titled Rest, and will be released via HHBTM on November 13th. She’s also currently touring all over the States, so see if you can catch her live while she’s out there.

Listen to a Dead Stars B-Side

deadstarsLong have we supported Dead Stars. They’re one of those acts that consistently perfect the are of nostalgic college rock n’ roll. They’ve got huge distorted riffs, pulled back to reveal a steadying melody that always maintains a central roll in their songs. By bridging the two together, they bring you these huge hooks that fit perfectly into long drives with wind in your hair. I love the patience of this song, which features as the B-Side to their”Calm Punk” single. Have fun jamming out this tune really loudly.

ATX Spotlight: A Few New Good Talk Songs

goodtalkAfter a weekend of celebrating good times at ACL Festival, it only seems appropriate that we kick off the week coming back home with some new ATX tunes. The two tracks below are the newest songs to come from local act, Good Talk. The band’s been picking up the pace of their activity in town recently, which might lead us to believe we can expect a full release from the band soon. One of my favorite things about the band is that they’re not really stepping too far out of the realm of every day indie rock, but what they are doing is perfecting the art, bringing in great melodies and a tenacity that often is lacking. These songs are free, but please donate so the band can bring you more tracks by going HERE

The Bill Ball: An Interview w/ Eric Bill — October 9th @ Swan Dive

12042917_10103610812125518_894458247127330031_nWith all the buzz about Austin music dying and what not, I think it’s interesting to note that there have been a ton of like-minded individuals coming out to create their own curated shows. We did ATX Popfest, Raw Paw had the Alien Zine, Vegas has Good Vibrations and now there’s the Bill Ball at Swan Dive on October 9th. These things have always been around, but they seem to be gaining prominence as people try to create a sense of community here in town. I caught up with Eric Bill of the band Big Bill to grab some of his thoughts on the First Annual Bill Ball…and his band too. Read on for the answers and a video for the Bill Ball! Read more
