Show Pics: 3 x 3 Series @ The Mohawk (9/21)

3x3 with Templo X 41We love live music. We love Austin artists. We want to help you love them, too. We need your help to keep bringing you the best jams for cheap. Go to our shows, buy our records. /rant

The 3 x 3 series is a brilliant idea. Let’s make it easy for venues to be open when we know it is a smaller show and get new bands exposure. We had another brilliant lineup for last Monday’s show. We got to check out the first live set for Mean Jolene, ever. We got to see Caitlin from Ultraviolet dedicate a song to her parents. We got to see Templo X for the last time in a while before Paul headed back up to Philly. I got to take pictures. It was a great night of talking with the musicians, busting balls about 90’s Emo bands and a ton of great new songs.

Do I Like This New Girls Names Single?

girlsnamesHmm. Do I like this? Well, I do like it, but I also have to see it as a completely different version than the Girls Names I originally came to love. Honestly, it seems like an entirely new band, though we’ve had hints with recent singles and 10″ coming from the band. What was once atmospheric and brooding now takes on the full focus, thrusting the band into a darkened world of filled negative space and slowly unraveling rapture. It sort of reminds me of what’s become of Iceage…though it seems like they’re getting a lot more out of their approach. Their new effort, Arms Around a Vision will be out on October 2nd. My final thoughts…yes, I like it.

Rad Sloppy Rocker from Never Young

neveryoungThe last time we heard from Never Young, we were blasting their self-titled EP, and it looks like they’re going to be rocking just as hard now that they’ve announced the limited cassette, NY Singles. I suppose it’s a shitty adjective to use, but from the get-go, this band seems like they’re barely containing themselves, barely holding it together. But, that being said, in this single they do hold it together, they do pull it all in and leave you wanting to hear more. It’s just one of three unreleased songs on this new effort, which comes at you on October 16th via Father Daughter Records.

Show Preview: Destroyer @ Mohawk (Tonight)

D700 Destroyer 156

Date TONIGHT
Location Mohawk
Doors 6:30 PM
Tickets $20 from TE

Perhaps the greatest thing to come out of the New Pornographers explosion (in my opinion) is the mass discovery of Dan Bejar. Now, I don’t want to take away from the rest of the group, but Dan, under his Destroyer moniker, has by and far exceeded my expectations. Everything he releases is ultimately interesting, and this year’s Posion Season is a must have in any modern indie record collection. And live, he’s something else. He’s one of those characters you can’t peel your eyes away from, leaving you emotionally invested in every musical note. Jennifer Castle will open the show early, so show up to support the support.

Hot New Single from Expert Alterations

expertIf you haven’t completely given into the world of indiepop, then perhaps this new single from Expert Alterations will be the one to get you there. Their new album You Can’t Always Be Liked is definitely in my list of must listens for the entirety of 2015, and the spirit in this song should be enough to make you see why. There’s a rolling rhythm section that builds the energy from the get-go, pushing the song forward as the guitars chime in and out. There’s almost a stutter to the way the vocals are delivered, which has a huge impact on the listener. You can grab this great LP from Kanine on October 30th.

Fresh New Gorgeous Bully Track

intransitI’ve written about Manchester’s Gorgeous Bully before, but I’m back to prepare you to fall in love with the band today. I think their latest single is probably the most simplistic, yet ambitious piece, yet. It’s been really hard for me to pull myself away from this track; it’s either the gentle strumming or the backing of the vocals reaching near angelic heights. For some this will be their first experience with the band, but for others, just another reason to fall for a great act. This song appears on the forthcoming In Transit Records Transmission Vol. 1 Compilation.

Intrigued By Billy Changer

billchangerI have a mental list of my favorite labels, and when things get stale, or I feel like everything we’re posting comes after some cooler site premiered it, I go looking at labels. That’s when I discovered this rad tune from Billy Changer that really has me intrigued. It’s the latest release from Lolipop Records, though some form of the album appears to have been out for some time. It’s one of those tracks that gets stuck in your head, and you find yourself playing it on repeat over and over again. It’s a self-titled effort, so give it a listen when you get a chance. Stream it all HERE.

I Love Lust for Youth + New Single

Lust For YouthIf you were to ask Brian or I what our favorite act was at SXSW this past year, it’s likely that one of us, or both, would have Lust for Youth high up on that list. Their performances were intoxicating, which says a lot considering they’ve got a lot of electronic work in their tracks. Even better, the band has a brand new track/single that they’re releasing today via Sacred Bones Records. It’s a solid number, just like their previous work; there’s definitely been a pop-centric twist unfolding at their camp, so take a listen today. The photo pictured left was the band hanging with B after one of their sets at Beerland. Nice chaps. Nice songs.

Show Preview: Mike Krol @ Mohawk — Tonight

mikeI get it. We all wanna watch Thee Oh Sees for the 407th time at Hotel Vegas, but you can catch them tomorrow, so pick the smarter option and head to Mohawk tonight to see Mike Krol. He’s gotten some great press for his rock n’ roll stylings, and his recent release via Merge, Turkey. But, like all good shows, you’ve got to have great openers, and this bill has two of my favorite Austin acts. Opening is Shivery Shakes around 10, so be there to support our boys. Also, Sweet Talk grabbed the middle slot, and trust me when I tell you that their new LP will definitely be in our Top Ten of Austin LPs to come out in 2015. Bet on it. The show’s $10, doors are at 9 PM.

ATX Spotlight: New Indoor Creature Video

1454832_1437394216488421_1779311965_nThough I currently know very little about Austin based band Indoor Creature, I’m looking to remedy that as much as I can starting now.  Caleb, ring leader of the group, just sent me an email with some information about a new video and single the band has been working on for awhile.  The track & video found below, called “Present Thinking”, is a beauty of a pop number filled with all kinds of fun jangly vibes and good times.  I’d say you check it out below and start paying attention to locals Indoor Creature.

You can also purchase and download the new LP from Indoor Creature entitled Present Thinking over on bandcamp.
