Brand New Music from The Bankees

The Bankees VLong have I championed The Bankees, a band that deserves far more appreciation than perhaps they’ve gotten.  Honestly, everything they’ve done has affected me in some manner or another.  I got great news today that the band has completed work on their 5th album, completing some of their best songs to date.  They remind me a little bit of a dreamier version of Comet Gain, perhaps including a little bit more psychedelic elements too.  I’ve spent the afternoon listening to V, the new album, and I’m offering up one of the many great tracks featured on the record.  If you’re looking for something that encompasses pop elements whilst still challenging your ears, then grab a listen here.

What’s Your Rupture to Release Any Other City

anyotherIn 2001 Life Without Buildings released Any Other City, and despite the limited available copies for the Glaswegian band, they quickly and quietly reached cult status.  But, like many things, they faded into our memories. That was until yesterday, when the excellent label What’s Your Rupture announced that they’d be re-releasing the heralded record as a special Record Store Day release, on April 19th in case you’re not on the up-and-up.  Just give yourself a little listen to the tune below; you’ll surely realize just why so many people hold this record so dear.

If you are in need of some quick rock infusion into your life, I suggest you check out this awesome track “Sheltered” from BLUFFING.  In accordance with the length of this tune, I shall keep this post as short as possible, and tell you to simply stick around for the shredding.  SHRED.

New album, Sugar Coated Pills of Wisdom, will be available next Tuesday on Paper Cup Music.

Dark Entries Re-Issue Ski Patrol

skiDark Entries is probably one of the most exciting record labels around, though they deal largely in reissues.  But, those releases always unearth incredible bands I’ve only heard mentioned in whispers of the past.  Their latest release will be an anthology from the UK’s Ski Patrol.  You’ll hear an  post-punk feel that was popularized by bands like Gang of Four, but there’s also a few songs on this release that show how far the group pushed things, incorporating the Jamaican influences of Britain at the time they were working (1979-82).  You can pick up Versions of a Life on April 15th, but for now listen to their hit “Agent Orange”

Incredible Pop Number From Nathan K.

I’ve really veen enjoying this beautiful new track called “Most Birthdays” from songwriter Nathan K.  To me, I’m reminded a bit of some of the greatest tracks from the likes of other great groovy songwriters like War on Drugs.  Nathan has some other great tracks over on his bandcamp page and you should also like him on facebook.  Stay tuned for more information on an upcoming album.  You’ll hear it here first!

Dirty Pop from Favored Nations

favoredNow that SXSW is over, it’s funny that I should get blasted into some of my favorite SXSW memories via a post involving former Diamond Nights member Morgan.  His new band, Favored Nations is a blend between Chromeo and Phoenix, offering these throwback pop songs that are geared towards lighting up the dance floors.  But, since Morgan’s at the helm, you’ll find some dirty lyrics, whether they’re truly referencing “Regular Pussy” or not will be up to you to decide.  While we all wait for the band to finish up their album, you can also check out THIS VIDEO that accompanies the tune below.

Another Denney and the Jets Jam

denneyIt makes perfect sense that Seth Murray of Natural Child would team up with Denney and the Jets for this tune.  The Nashville band seems to embody the same approach, at least as of late, to writing songs that bridge the gap between garage rock and classic rock n’ roll.  This tune will be featured on the band’s forthcoming record, Mexican Coke, which is being released by Burger Records on April 8th. The record explores themes of substances use, family, rodeo clowns and loads more, tying it all into the iconic history of Tennessee songwriting.  Take a little listen.

New Dark Wave from Moses Gold

phillThose of you paying attention to the electronic scene might recognize Moses Gold, at least when you hear it’s the project of Phill Young; he’s one of the men behind Christian AIDS/Stay +.  He’s going it on his own these days, and he’s crafted this wonderfully dark bit of electronic pop music, featuring a vocal that’s both beautiful and haunting.  I don’t want to say that it wholly resembles Majical Cloudz, but it has the same sort of emotional effect, using electronics as a background from which Young can paint his songs. You can pick up his limited 12″ vinyl now from Bleeding Gold.

New(ish) Track From Plateau Below

plateau-belowMy apologies to everyone involved for missing this sweet new song called “Riverside” by Bloomington based Plateau Below.  That little thing SXSW happened and everything just went to hell… Either way, the track is a hard one to define genre wise.  That’s usually a good sign right?  For starters, I love the power and angst felt in the vocals along with the subdued parts that build and build into some gripping moments in this song.  Hopefully you agree and will check out the band’s entire new album, Still Paradise, which can be streamed in full over on soundcloud.

Low Key Pop from Firestations

watlsLondon’s Firestations are quietly building steam overseas; I can tell why after listening to this number.  The song opens with this quiet piece of pop via a male voice, but then it moves forward with a nice little duet that completely changes the feeling of the song.  It’s darkness evaporates, allowing for an emotional light to push its way inside. I love how the track closes on a brighter note after returning to the solitude of the lone male singer, briefly.  No word on when they’ll have an album out, but it should come soon via Waltz Time Records.
