Let’s Rock with Dirty Fences

DF_2LORESLate last year I brought you a nice little anthemic rocker from Dirty Fences, and I almost forgot about them. That’s until I received this new single to help spread the word on the release of their new LP.  Their album Too High To Kross was released today by Volcom Entertainment, and I think a lot of people will really enjoy this tune.  You’ll find a catchy/anthemic chorus you can sing along to, but the music got this fast paced heavy grit to it, which isn’t too far off the beaten path from bands like QOTSA…minus the drama. Kick off your shoes and let this one blow back your hair.

Straight Rock From Hooded Fang

1874I seem to be getting more into a rock n roll mood after SXSW with all the awesome sludge/punk rock bands I managed to take in during the week.  This new song “Graves”  from Toronto based outfit Hooded Fang fits nicely into that genre, but manages to fit some really nice pop elements throughout as well.  Oh and dzamn, that baseline is just killing it right?  Right?

Introducing: Dead Owls

570396716-1I think it’s my personal job to try my best to cover the Australian scene from afar, so I bring you my latest discovery, Dead Owls.  The band hails from Perth, which is quite a bit away from the traditional hotspots like Melbourne and Sydney.  I chose to use this track off the band’s new Small Talk EP (out now on Gun Fever Records) because I think it shows both sides of their approach to songwriting.  It starts off rather casual and poppy, but it’s got a fierce ending based around garage rock stylings–those are effects that the group employs more often on the rest of their latest EP.  It’s just a good-hearted jam, and I hope you look into the band.  Let’s show Australia we love them.

Effected Rock From Bass Drum Of Death

Bass Drum of DeathBass Drum of Death has long been a favorite of the staff around here.  I think the no nonsense punk rock n roll thing is clearly something we all appreciate when it comes down to it.  This new track “Shattered Me” is definitely a “no nonsense” punk rock song, but also has this beautifully constructed chorus that shows maybe a new side to the band.  Maybe Barrett can write the hits too?

A new self-titled album is due out June 25th on Innovative Literature.

New Indie Pop from Army Navy

Army Navy specialize in crafting catchy indie pop with calming vocals that allow for maximum enjoyment play after play.  On this tune, there’s a jangling swing that goes down just at the chorus, and it makes my indie heart swoon just listening to it.  The band have been courteous to offer up the tune to their fans, so we’re sharing it with you today.  However, this is just a glimpse of what’s to come from the group on their forthcoming album, which will come your way shortly.

Bright Post-Pop Track from Skint & Demoralised

artworks-000040270891-ocqx0i-t500x500Not going to lie, the name of the band, Skint & Demoralised, is throwing me off a bit, but I can’t get the group’s latest B-Side out of my head.  The vocal delivery is spot on for what the band has done in the past, often using spoken word vocal approaches, though that’s not what you’ve got here.  I like the way the guitars seem to take an angular fade out, while the drums provide a dance-heavy beat to get your groove on.  You can find this catchy number on the group’s newest single, Breakfast at Sylvia’s, which just came out, so you’ll be glad to get your hands on such a hit.

Pure Indie Rock from Overseas

overseas-album-cover-500I know Ryan will agree with this, as Overseas are pretty much our favorite super group.  As Texas kids of the 90s, we grew into our own listening to the music of Centro-matic, Pedro the Lion and Bedhead, all who have components that are playing key roles here.  That’s right, you’ve got the Kadane’s, Will Johnson and Mr. Bazan.  I don’t think that anyone who was around that the very thought of that combination alone gets chills going.  I don’t need to say much, but I’ll share a few jams with you, just so you can revel in our joy. They’ll release their self-titled LP on June 11th.

Classic Brit Pop Sound from Tripwires

tripwiresI’ve heard a few tunes from Reading’s Tripwires up to this point, but nothing seems as fittingly British as this new single that they’ve just released. It’s reminiscent of old Travis tunes, but there’s a bit more messing with the atmospheric attitude lurking in the background.  That sort of exploration shows a band growing in their confidence, but also a group destined to forge their own territory.  The group will be releasing their album, Spacehopper, via Frenchkiss Records; it’ll be in stores on June 18th. I think the group can go several ways, so I’m excited to see what direction they choose to pursue. I’m sure we’ll all enjoy it, regardless.

Sweet Pop from Sugar Stems

On the group’s new record they combine all the classic elements of power-pop, though with a steady punk edge.  Top it off with some sweet female vocal harmonies and you’ve got precisely what you need to leave listeners with a breathless hit.  The band will release their new record, Can’t Wait, today via the always reliable Dirtnap Records, so you’ll be able to bob your head up and down all day if you just hit up your local record store.
