New Jam from Entertainment

Sometimes with all the hype makings its way over the waves of the Atlantic, we don’t always get to hear about the hard working bands that deserve some love.  Luckily for you, I’m going to introduce you to Entertainment, a British band that recalls slight hints of Dinosaur Jr., but also more mainstream acts like Oasis.  Perhaps I’m way off on that, and hopefully the band doesn’t take it as a slight, but for me, the melding of those two sounds works perfectly here.  There’s anthemic vocals, but distorted cascading guitars that ring loudly in your earbuds.  Definitely a band worth your time today.

New Gem from AC Newman

I’m not going to lie to you; I think AC Newman is perhaps one of the best songwriters around.  Sure, a lot of people agree, especially when you throw him with New Pornographers, but I feel like a lot of people overlook his solo efforts (sadly!).  On October 9th Matador Records will be releasing AC’s 3rd record, Shut Down the Streets, and hopefully you’ll listen to this song below and realize just how awesome his songwriting is.  Personally, his voice alone, with its tiny inflections, gets me every time.  Listen here, and try to argue with the gifts of this dude.

More New Music From Plateaus

Towards the beginning of summer, we brought you the first taste of this new gritty punk rock band out of California Plateaus.   With the excitement around here about the band back then, you had to know we’d be posting their songs every time a new is sent our way.  This great new song “Stop Messing Around” will appear on the band’s upcoming self-titled debut LP due out October 30th on Art Fag Records.

New California Pop From The Reflections

This awesome new song “Summer Days” by The Reflections was just sent my way the other day and I think it’s definitely something worth your time.  It’s a breezy pop number that evokes the feelings of being on a beach in California, which the band would know a lot about being from L.A.  A solid release date for a new album from the group is not yet available, but we’ll be sure to let you know when we hear something.  Stay tuned.

Great Rocker from Best Friends

I guess I was wrong! I had planned on making it a mellow day for you all, but I can’t resist putting up this track from Sheffield’s Best Friends. The group just did a split for Art Is Hard Records, which unfortunately sold out super fast…I guess that means everyone is as excited by them as I am at the moment.  This tune is a fast paced rocker that just jumps out of your stereo from start to finish.  I can see these guys taking the stage with Terry Malts, pummeling our ears in a furious fashion, giving us instant pop gratification. Ya dig?

New Mellow Jam from Mount Eerie

It looks as though we’re going to wrap up our great week here with the mellower side of things, and I’m perfectly okay with that.  We’re nearing the release of the second Mount Eerie album, from Phil Elverum this year; Ocean Roar is supposed to be contrasted with Clear Moon, which came out early in 2012. When listening here, I feel as if this track is dominated by the percussive element, even though it’s lightly placed in the background.  Phil quietly sings atop it all while a hint of atmospherics moving in and out.  Really, there’s no one making music like Phil.

New Music from Franz Nicolay

Franz Nicolay certainly has kept himself busy since leaving The Hold Steady.  Aside from touring with Against Me, he’s been working on new music to create his latest effort, Do The Struggle, which will be out on October 9th.  While I can definitely see a slight edge from touring with some rock n’ roll bands, that’s not what this music is about anymore for Franzy.  He’s crafted some grandiose orchestral pop that will leave you encouraged by what he can accomplish with the proper set-up.  I definitely see some strides to step out on his own, and I’ll praise him for that while waiting for the new release.

New Smooth Tune From Snowblink

I knew close to nothing about Toronto based outfit Snowblink prior to listening to their tunes today.  After a few listens, I’m glad I gave them a chance.  The band weaves a very intricate portrait with all of their beautifully crafted music.  New song below, “Unsurfed Waves”, is sure to give you some kind of an idea as to what I’m talking about when I say the band has well crafted tunes.  If I’ve peaked your interest, the band will be dropping new album Inner Classics on September 11th via Arts & Crafts Records.  Enjoy.

New Music from Michael Andrews

Odds are you know Michael Andrews better than you think you do; all I’m going to say is Donnie Darko, and let you do the research.  But, my musical tastes are all over the map today, so I figured I’d give you another gem from a singer/songwriter that I think you’ll enjoy.  Michael’s got a new record titled Spilling A Rainbow, which just came out on Everloving a day or so ago.  At times, his work here reminds me of Elliott Smith, but at other times there’s elements of Badly Drawn Boy…then again, I can see this as the work of some hipster Grateful Dead fan.  Who knows, maybe you’ll dig it.

Great Power Pop from the Barreracudas

I’ve been jamming out to the Barreracudas for quite some time, having fallen head over heels for Nocturnal Missions, their last LP.  But, this summer they kicked out the jams with a new 7″ for Windian Records, hopefully to pass the time as they record a new full-length.  If you like your guitars shredded fast with a bit of keyboard in the background to propel things in the direction of sugary goodness, then you’ll absolutely love this track.  Oh, and that slight vocal hiccup? Marvelous.  Enjoy this jam and get your hands on the 7″ before they run out!
