New Jam from Saint Motel

Clearly, summer is upon us, so it’s time to figure out your summer playlists as you head out to the pool, lake, or even the bar.  So one track that’s been giving me a good bit of pep in the step is this new single from Saint Motel.  Listening to it, I can’t even place what the influences are, as the song seems familiar in the sense that the song is catchy and fun, but I can’t pinpoint who I’d say they sound like at the moment. I mean, that’s a good sign right.  From the bouncing piano/keyboard intro, to the precision work on the high-hat, to the melodic vocal harmonies, it’s a well-crafted song through and through.  Here’s a band you’ll enjoy all summer long.

More New Music From Gardens & Villa

After sharing “Black Hills” over a month ago, here’s another new synth-pop song called “Star Fire Power” from Gardens & Villa.  This new track is pretty similar to the last one we shared, but with a bit more of the 80s vibe going on.  Once again, you can pick up the new self-titled album on July 5th via Secretly Canadian.

Chaos in Tejas Highlight: The Spits

The first band in our installment of highlights for the wonderful Chaos in Tejas is The Spits.  They’re a Seattle punk group who’ve released four LPs and a slew of compilations and 7 inches.  Listening to them, I get this old Misfits feeling, though I’m sure that’s just wishful thinking on my part.  They’re known to don costumes on stage, such as in this picture, and you’re guaranteed to get fast, dirty punk rock that’s going to have you bobbing your head, jumping up and down, or at the very least, tapping your toes.  The band will be playing their darkness punk at Red 7 on Thursday, along with some great acts ( a few from Austin) like TV Ghost and High Tension Wires.  For those with a passion for the harder edge, this is a great night to kick off the festival, so be sure to show up early and get your punk on with the Spits.

New Music From Shoreline Is

Here’s a new track from German based band Shoreline Is that’s sure to pop up on my summertime playlist as I drive off into the sunset.  This pop jam “Living Things” and 4 others appear on the recently released EP from the band simply titled Demos.  If you’re liking what you here from these shoe-gazey style mates, head on over to their soundcloud or bandcamp to have a listen to some of their other music.  The band name ironically works quite well with the sound they create.

Single Cuts Music Collaboration

Not long ago, our amigo Abram of The Great Nostalgic came to us with this crazy idea of gathering some of Austin’s finest musicians and asking them to write, records, and mix a song in one day.  Despite thinking the guy may have lost his mind, we loved the idea and were excited to see if he could actually pull it off.  Well now welcome Single Cuts, the project created by Mr. Shook along with some of the finest talents this town has to offer.  Already the collaboration project has posted a new song entitled “Jackie” which features members of The Lemurs, Royal Forrest, One Hundred Flowers, vocals from Dana Falconberry, of course Abram from TGC, and engineering from Erik Wofford.  For a song written, recorded, and mixed in less than 24 hours, it actually turned out pretty swell.  Stay tuned to the Single Cuts website, twitter, and facebook for updates on another upcoming project.

New Music From Roadside Graves

I’m sure some of you have already heard and enjoyed this new song from Roadside Graves “Love Me More”, but I wanted to share for those who had yet to hear it’s sweetness.  The song is a beautifully simple folk-rock style number that’s sure to get a couple tears from you softies.  Sometimes you people think we ATH staffers have no feelings so this song should show you that we do indeed have souls.  This new song will appear on the band’s upcoming LP We Can Take Care of Ourselves due out July 19th on Autumn Tone.

New Music from Chelsea Wolfe

You’re not likely to find a female musician who comes across as beautifully haunting as Ms. Chelsea Wolfe.  It’s not just her look, but the way her songs capture this dark density, then softly wrap that around the gentle cool in her voice.  Even short tracks, such as the one below, will reach into you, grabbing hold of you inner dark side, hoping to pull out every hidden secret in hopes of freeing your soul.  Ms. Wolfe will be releasing her new record Apokalypsis on July 21st via Pendu Sound Recordings, and surely this effort will mark her as one to be watched from here on out. I dare you not to let yourself get lost in this mesmerizing track.

New Single from Brilliant Colors

As summertime grows closer, and the weather warms up, you’re probably looking for a new girl-group to give you some breezy minimalist pop music a la Best Coast.  Well, the welcome return of Brilliant Colors and their new single definitely looks to fulfill those desires.  With a tendency to give you a delicate bouncing rhythm next to jangling guitars, infectious hooks will surely invade your mind.  Luckily for us, the band will be releasing their new record, Again and Again, on Slumberland Records on July 19th, so we’ll be getting more of these hazy summertime ditties to fill up our hard drives pretty soon.

New Track from Gold Leaves

Grant Olsen looks like he’s going to be making a name for himself this year.  He’s just signed on with our dear friends over at Hardly Art, and completed the recording of his album The Ornament with one of my favorites, Jason Q of the Papercuts.  The label plans to release the record under the name Gold Leaves on August 11th, and you’re going to love it.  There’s this warm melodic quality to it, sprawling out with a bit of melancholy and vocal that will remind you of a lot of great voices, namely that of Robin Pecknold, just more subdued.  This truly is a magnificent song, and it’s going to be a fantastic record.

New Jam from Wax Museums

It’s been a long week, and I really something that would kick me in the teeth, no apologies.  I got exactly that today when I got the new song from Wax Museums in my inbox today.  This Texas punk group are going to be releasing their new LP, Eye Times, on Trouble in Mind Records on June 28th, and I couldn’t be more ecstatic.  Their brash and noisy, yet totally controlled, giving you an adventure that will allow you to bounce around the living room with your pals.  Sometimes high-octane punk rock can cure all your ills, and that’s precisely what this tune does.  Need a fix? Here you go.
