Brand New Tunes from Animal Daydream

AD_promopic2_citrus-bwHaving talked about Animal Daydream last year, it only makes sense that I give some love to their new single, “Citrus.” Well, that and it’s just a really great track looking back to a pure era in American songwriting…though the group hails from Sweden. Imagine finding yourself in Haight-Ashbury, slowly indulging in really warm harmonies and smooth Cali guitar sounds. It’s charming to say the least, but I love how some of the chords slide out in the latter half of the song, carrying you gently into the song’s bouncing closing moments. The Citrus EP will be one of the first new releases from our favorite label, Jigsaw Records, hitting in late January of next year.

The Levitation 2016 Lineup is Here!

Levitation-Artwork-640x414One of the best festivals in town, Levitation (FKA Austin Psych Fest) has just announced their full lineup for next year’s fest. While we already knew that the folks over at The Reverberation Appreciation Society would not disappoint, they seemed to out do themselves yet again. AnCo? Brian Wilson performing Pet Sounds? Ty Segall? Woods? Parquet Courts? Delicate Steve? Chicano Batman? What more could you possibly want from a festival?!

Watch the announcement video below, featuring footage from last years festival, and then go scoop up your tickets for the weekend of April  29th through May 1st over here.

Jam This Cover From Those Darlins

11049118_10153029290821059_6263931789832497561_nA bit of sad news comes with this post, but not to worry, there’s a good track at the bottom to ease the pain. Those Darlins, of Nashville, have announced an “indefinite hiatus” and a final round of tour dates for their current send out of the musical world for now. While this is a bummer, with this announcement they’ve released a cover of “Female Trouble” by Divine. It’s a sultry take on a classic song, with grooving bass lines more present in their rendition and a bit of snarl in the guitars. Take a listen below and simultaneously find solace and sorrow in light of the band’s announcement.

Stiletto Feels Release Video

stilettofeels-1A week ago we dropped our Top Austin Albums, and one of the surprises was the debut from Stiletto Feels, The Big Fist. We had high expectations for Geoff Earle’s new project, but I honestly didn’t expect such a finished project. It’s a listen filled with all sorts of touches, be they electronic or indie rock…or even just great riffs. This week the band have unleashed their video for the super-hit, “Steel Your Guitar,” which is like a smoothed out R&B rock n’ roll jam. Check out the video below and grab the LP from GTZ Records.

More New Music from Cian Nugent

cianI’m particular to voices that don’t quite sound perfect, which is perhaps the reason why I’ve been gravitating to the work of Cian Nugent. He’s capable of holding a melody, sure, but there’s something just a bit off, just a touch rough that really grabs your ear. Musically, the song alternates between folk-laden ballad and all out-country jam; they employ a fiddle here rather than they oft-overused violin. His new record, Night Fiction, is getting a release via Woodsist; it should hit stores in late January, keeping you warm just as the world freezes over. Stream it.

Nostalgia-Inducing Track From Pete Astor

10446260_536132329858294_6726656516909291578_oYou probably know Pete Astor from his work with The Loft, or perhaps The Weather Prophets, or maybe from his own solo work. However you know him, or even if you don’t, you should stop what you’re doing and listen to this new track, “Really Something,” that’s taken from his latest LP, Spilt Milk, which we can expect next February on Slumberland Records. This song is a bit of a blend of new and old; it’s got that faded jangly guitar sound reminiscent of the early 80s, but it also has the modern laid back coolness that we see from bands today. Take a listen and enjoy.

New Video Featuring The Sunny Pop Of Chorusgirl

chorusgirlLondon’s Chorusgirl released their album not too long ago at the beginning of November, and from that album, today they’ve shared a rad little music video for the track, “Dream On, Baby Blue.” This track is a bright and airy dreamy pop song that’s got enough sunshine in it to bring you back to warmer days (even though it’s not that cold here in the ATX). You can watch the quirky music video below, and be sure to pick up a copy of their debut album here, as they are clearly cranking out some good tunes.

Album Stream: Husky Rescue – The Long Lost Friend

huskyFinding yourself lost in the new album from Husky Rescue shouldn’t be much of a problem, yet that’s precisely where I think the music is intended to go. The Long Lost Friend (Special Edition) is brimming with electronic experimentation, symphonic flourish and the gorgeous voice of Johanna Kalen; each song takes you somewhere new, be it the pulsing throb of “Under Friendly Fire” or the oddball experiment of “Tree House,” each song sounds different. Each tracks leaves you somewhere new. If anything, the collection of songs take you all over the map, yet the album’s design is cohesive, leaving you precisely where you left off. It’s available this Friday via Catskills Records

New Music from Great Lakes

GreatLakesCOLOR1Winter is here folks, well, musically speaking. It’s that time of year when slow ballads and folk-laden tunes are coming left and right, but perhaps none more enjoyable than this bit from Great Lakes. The center of this song holds true to modern folk/Americana tropes, but the layering of harmonies and various bits of instrumentation adds more depth to the song itself, creating a dense study in the genre for listeners. The Brooklyn (by way of Athens) will be releasing their 5th album next year; Wild Vision is being put out by Loose Truck Records on January 22nd.

Sit Back and Enjoy The Crookes

avatars-000069037526-aoum01-t500x500I’ve mentioned UK band The Crookes several times before on our website and the band has always been hovering a bit in that not huge yet should be area.  Today I think the band may be breaking out with this new single “The World is Waiting”.  This is truly a brit pop gem here with some incredible, driving guitars and this overall sense of urgency permeating through.  I’m seeing a lot to be enjoyed here.

The Crookes will drop Lucky Ones via Modern Outsider on January 29th.
