A Blend of Shoegaze and Psych From Cull

cbdabc34-e43a-423c-953e-9a81e4b8090b-3So you love music of both the shoegaze and psych rock persuasion, and you’re wondering why you can’t have both at once– well, look no further, as Sydney’s Cull have the perfect solution for your dire needs. This track, “Truth Bomb,” is bountiful song of genre and jam and wastes no time jumping right into the swing of things. The guitars that greet you are both twangy and lush as they swirl through the mix, while the vocals are soft and sweet and everything seems mild and calm before the band jumps suddenly to sort of a metal break in the track; the guitars get heavy and so does the percussion for a brief time until the band launches right back into the psych shoegaze from before. Take a listen, fall in love and then get ready for more from the band when they release their debut album, Aloft on October 24th.

Clearance Rocks College Radio Styles

clearanceYou looking for the new Malkmus? The new Pavement? I think you better invest some time in this new Clearance single.  It’s a little bit more upbeat than some of the band’s other recordings, but it’s infectious stylings are undeniable. After a slew of well-received 7 inches, the group are finally coming around to release their debut, Rapid Rewards; it will see a release date on September 29th via Tall Pat and Unsatisfied Records.  Seriously, if you don’t hear Malkmus in here you aren’t listening close enough…get that ear up to the speaker.

ATX Spotlight: Ultraviolet Release EP

ultravioletYou should probably clear a little bit of your schedule today. You’ll need roughly 25 minutes, give or take a few seconds, that way you can absorb this great new EP from Ultraviolet.  The Austin act has been crafting really dense shoegaze, filled with distant guitar echoes and airy vocals from singer Caitlin. This new EP just went up HERE the other day, and I wanted to be sure it’s on your radar, as I encourage you to listen all day today. Then, since it’s good for your soul and for Austin, you should donate a buck or five to the group (if you like it), so they can continue to make great tunes. Stream one of the tunes below…and look out for news on the band’s next live show!

Check Out This Grunge Rock Track From Stove

unnamedStove is the project of Stove Van Borden, or the imagined name of Steve Hartlett, who wrote and preformed the entirety of the upcoming album, which is called Is Stupider and promises a blend of vision from the gentleman, but a vision nonetheless. This track, “Jock Dreams,” gives us a slight taste of this vision, and its one that includes a great deal of grunge and hints of the slacker punk that we are most likely to meet in more detail come November 20th via Exploding in Sound. The guitars grumble through the heavy bass lines as the voice of Stove lightens the mix. Take a listen.

Melodic Noise Pop from Dead Leaf Echo

deadleafDead Leaf Echo have been hard at work on their newest LP, the follow up to Thought and Language, but in the meantime they give us a glimpse of their direction with this splendid shoegaze ditty.  Like the best of the genre, the melodic core of this song is the most important aspect, drawing in the listener. Meanwhile, there is a light bit of atmospheric guitar swirling around the core, creating a song worthy of repeated listens while you’re sitting at home. This new single will be released on a new 7″ on September 15th, which you can order HERE while you away the new record.

Did You Listen to The Goon Sax Yet

CH132 Sometimes AccidentallyI love Aussie label Chapter Music, but it looks like they’re about to really knock it out of the park with their new signing The Goon Sax. They just signed the teenage band, and it sounds remarkably like a wonderful blend of Violent Femmes and Go-Betweens…ultimately making for the best music combination ever.  It’s filled with an infectious bounce and a remarkably unique, yet familiar, vocal delivery.  They’ll be releasing Up to Anything early next year via the label, so stay tuned for another incredible single soon!

New Single from Tuff Shunshine

tuffThis brand new Tuff Sunshine track came into the ATH offices this morning, and it’s really hard to turn it off. It recalls that perfect era of indie rock, at least to me, during the late 90s and early 00s where Americana and punk rock all started to fuse (outside the emo realm).  It’s got this incredible groove that drives it, but there’s also this distinctive quality that makes it feel like the brother of Superchunk, just a bit warmer on the ears. The NYC trio will release Fire in the Hero Building on October 31st.

Slightly Late To The Party: New Moses Sumney Track

11066546_1056172774396423_6186988763662925916_nMoses Sumney has been gaining lots of attention for his soulful folk tunes as of late, and when I heard this new track “Pleas,” I realized it was time to show him a little attention myself. When you press play on this number, you’ll be welcomed the delicate guitar plucking and Sumney’s rich vocals that ooze warmth cut you slightly with their gentle rasp. It’s a great simple folk song, but it’s clear that the vocals are the main attraction, and near the end of the song you are treated to some chilling oohs that showcase his power in that field. Take a listen and fall in love, then go pre-order it here.
